Liberals Trail NDP In Quebec

Ouch, more bad news for Ignatieff on the day of the French language debates. According to Nanos the NDP has now overtaken the Liberals in popular support in Quebec, which once upon a time was a Liberal stronghold. Even with the Dippers polling higher, the Liberals will win more seats than their socialist counterparts because most LPC support is efficiently concentrated in the Montreal area. Polling in 4th place in the 2nd most populated province virtually eliminates any probability that the Liberals win even a minority government.

The irony here is that the Tories were supposed to be wiped out in Quebec for not pledging tax money for the new arena. Iggy came out before the election and opportunistically announced that he'd help pay for it. Now here we are halfway through the campaign and Team Ignatieff is plummeting in la belle province. We will see what happens on election day, but it seems like every time we have an election these days, Chantal Hebert predicts the death of the Tories in Quebec at the start of the campaign. How many times does she have to wrong before she admits that she is not as in tune with the average Quebecker as she purports; but rather her own circle of friends. It is as they say, birds of a feather flock together.

All this being said, the French language debates tonight can change everything.

  1. harpo looks stressed in the french debates. saw the hair gel crrraack... will he keep all 10 seats? doubtful. he needs to.

fact is, nothing much will change in quebec. harper may lose a few, the diipers rise in popular votes but the only party to take new ground will be the libs. one or two seats.

sorry iceman, no majority for you. cheer up, you'll get another minority.

you'll also get a new CPC leader.

guess what u won't get? a decent job.

Psst he's also not from Quebec.Duceppe lost for being Bloc.No offense to french people, great folks.Libs lost for pushing cap and trade. The NDP have well intentions but when has that every worked out in our world?People with rose coloured glasses tend to get beat up by folks like Gadaffi and imadinnerjacket.

  5. Ignatieff looked "angry" and he has a "Hidden agenda". He talked gooblegab poppycock. He is in over his head. Too bad Canadians have to pay $300 Million for the Liberals to get rid of the count. The guy has no clue on any policy. All he is is a dirt mud thrower.
Prime Minister Harper had class. Layton is a snake oil salesman and Duceppe just wants to suck all the taxpayers money he can from Canadians. They will be trying to form a coalition. The 3 amigos are liars and opportunists. PM Harper better get a majority or god help Canada. Tax and spend socialists and Liberal thiefs.Yikes.

  6. Zinger of the French debate: Duceppe: Mr. Harper, if you had given $300 million to seniors, Mr. Layton would have supported your budget, and we would have avoided this election. But this same $300 million went to the election instead, because you in fact wanted it.

  7. Harper won the English debate by a very long shot. As for the French debate, I'm sorry to say he didn't do as good as I hoped. I consider Duceppe won that one with Layton close second and a tie for third place. Even if Duceppe did pretty good in the French debate, I don't think he will go up in the polls. I get a feeling many viewer found the debate boring and changed channel after the first 30 minutes. NDP will go up which is good for the Conservatives. Liberals will stay the same. Only the English speaking Québecois vote Liberal who are concentrated in the west end of Montreal. I predict Concervative will keep all there seats and maybe add one or two. I hope Trudeau losses in his riding to the Bloc. (the only riding in the whole of Quebec where I want the Bloc to win !)

  8. I liked when PMSH said

unlike Mr Ignatieff, who wants a mandate from Layton and Duceppe,
I get my mandate from the people.

  13. There are no more than 25,000 French-speaking people in Manitoba. There are more than ten times that many in New Brunswick, and twice that again in Ontario, but still, well over 90% of the French vote lives in Quebec. Don't expect any focus on any place else any time soon.
