Today watching Power Play I learned that Helena Guergis will indeed be running in the next election as an Independent. Kudos to her for wanted to continue with public office after all that controversy, but her probability of winning is actually very small. The Guergis family was all but wiped out of municipal politics in the area in the 2010 elections after being mired in controversy over a local land development issue. The Guergis brand has become politically toxic in Simcoe-Grey, which is probably part of the reason that the PM did not want her run on as the Conservative candidate.
The Liberals won this riding in 1997 and 2000 when the Tory vote was divided, but the Libs never surpassed the combined vote of Reform/Alliance + PC. This is a rather Conservative riding, and it will be interesting to see how many Tory votes she can take with her. The key to her winning will be her ability to attract Liberal voters, and I'm not sure if she can do that. After some of the inflammatory statements made by Liberal MPs in the early days of Busty hookergate, I don't see how they cross that bridge.
I just finished viewing that segment, and I thought Ms. Guergis showed class and restraint beside those two opposition hyenas, especially Anita Neville, who was one of her main tormentors.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad the Conservative Party risks losing the Simcoe-Grey riding, all on account of unsubstantiated accusations and vile innuendo.

She was in the HofC today and voted with the government on all the motions.
ReplyDeleteA Poll was recently done of Simcoe-Grey voters and it showed that Helena would take 3% of the vote and the riding would stay Conservative.
ReplyDeleteIf Helena had stayed in CPC things would not be so quiet for her in the HoC. The opposition have moved on only because Helena is a independent. Jaffer will always be a monkey on the CPC's back. Never underestimate Harper, there is a reason Helena is not a CPC today.

A large portion of the voters in that riding are military, so it doesn't surprise me that Guergis would not do very well against the Conservatives. Although, many sergeants in CFB Borden admitted they had voted for Guergis because they thought she was pretty hot...
ReplyDeleteMs. Guergis has actually said for some time that she would run again as an Independent.
ReplyDeleteThe Liberals will have the additional barrier to overcome of needing a candidate in that riding, as Ms. Matrosovs stepped won a few months back when she and her husband moved away for work, I believe it was.
stepped *down*, I meant to write
ReplyDeleteDon't count her out. I have many friends relatives in that riding and I do not personally believe that 3% poll. Her cousin did himself in with the site 41 deal but Helena has solid backing.
ReplyDeleteClass? Helena Guergis has about as much class as a two-bit hooker! And that comment is very degrading to all two-bit hookers.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe she has solid backing. She will bleed votes away from the CPC but not to the extent of the previous CP/Alliance scenerio. I for one will, as a CPC member, be voting at the end of March for our new CPC member. This person will be the CPC representative, democratically elected by party members, in the next federal election. I will be voting for the CPC member not for Helena.
ReplyDeleteI will vote for the newly appointed candidate. Enough of her shenanigans. She should have been fired at the PEI airport and arrested.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Harper he finally saw the light.
