What Should Parliament Address First?

When our new federal Parliament is officially sworn in and gets to work, what legislation would you like to see them get to work on first? The Conservatives will be re-introducing and passing their budget as one of the first priorities, but what should come next? Scrapping tax subsidies to political parties? Senate reform? Privatizing the CBC? Eliminating the gun registry? Parliamentary seat distribution reform? Tough on crime bills? This is to be the subject of an upcoming poll question, but I'd like to listen to suggestions first to make sure I'm not forgetting anything. These are not secret agenda items; they are campaign promises, and we have a majority mandate.

  1. Eliminate the Canadian Wheat Board.

  3. Privatizing the CBC is NOT going to happen.

    First up:
    Scrapping political party subsidy
    Parliamentary seat distribution
    Scrapping long gun registry
    Ending wheat board monopoly

  4. The Budget, please!

  5. Cutting the deficit and start repaying our debts.
Also, set up the Office of Religious Freedom at DFAIT.

After those things are done, come up with a new strategy in Af-Pak, perhaps utilizing covert assets more. From what I remember, Harper did advocate the creation of a foreign intelligence agency to help us fight the war against Islamic terrorism. Considering the events in Pak, I think now would be a good time to make these changes.

  6. It would be nice if the budget included the elimination of the "per vote" subsidy.

  7. The so called experts have said he should do all the hard unpopular things within the first year, so they will not be election issues next time.
First off the budget, with the subsidy for votes gone, faster than he first proposed.
With the way the ndp has been outed for that money, even if other parties do it, the ndp has been caught red handed. Bet it wont happen again, and a lot of those new 57 in Quebec will be back on the street.

  8. Something healthcare related, like a national drug purchasing program, and/or changes to allow for more private delivery. Big Middle Canada wants health care action, and I don't blame them.

  9. If they want to prove they're serious about changing Ottawa and being responsible with our money, they could do something to eliminate those gold-plated pensions that no other Canadian has a hope in hell of ever getting close to, at the same time they ditch the subsidy. Maybe that's a little optimistic, but it would probably be the most popular thing any politician has ever done.

  13. The very first thing after voting in a new speaker should be to repeal the decision that the Conservatives were in contempt of parliament. The results of the election plainly show what ordinary Canadians thought of it, but make it official by putting the contempt this parliament has for that contempt citation. Otherwise, down the road we will hear about his foolishness again.

  15. All the things mentioned in the budget , which basically was their platform, then they need to buckle down to dealing with the national health crisis which is looming over our heads, and is only going to get worse in a very short time...Some serious discussions and actions are needed, involving the provinces as well as the federal government.

  16. get the federal government out of provincial jurisdictions. healthcare is a place to good start.

  17. The one thing that B. Mulroney promised to do and didn't (privatize/sell)the CBC.

By ridding Canada of this pest hole we would garner something like $3.000.000.00 and add another 2.000.000.00 that we pay in subsidies.
This cash would go a long way to eliminate the deficit.

  18. All of the above,ASAP.In fact parliment should sit until every single issue is dealt with.No more BS,no more holidays, they get the big bucks, down to business, ready or not.

  19. Give Kevin Page his 2 week severance, let's see if he can hold a real job with his BS predictions.

"make it official by putting the contempt this parliament has for that contempt citation. Otherwise, down the road we will hear about his foolishness again."

My understanding is that the contempt motion never officially made it to a vote. The idiot Libs were in such a hurry for an election they moved their non confidence motion before the contempt motion came up.
