Yesterday the Liberal Party announced their intention to vote against tougher restrictions and penalties on human smuggling, preferring instead to allow the dangerous and exploitative practice to continue in its current form. They are sending the message (with a little help from their coalition friends) that it is okay to cram hundreds of people into the cargo hold of a ship for months at a time in unsanitary conditions with inadequate supplies. We should not take preventative action, and should block any meaningful attempt at immigration reform.
The legislation was okay on first reading, but now untenable on second reading? What happened in between? Do you think Iggy would have flopped to his new position had it not been for the news that the citizenship failure rate has doubled with the new test? I think Iggy is preparing to attack the government on immigration in a vain attempt to win back support from a demographic that has been shifting Tory in recent elections. That's all this is. Taber is speculating that the Conservatives will make the immigration reform bill a confidence motion.
This is a bill on which an election could be fought. I hope it does become a confidence motion.
ReplyDeleteThen half way through the second week of the campaign Harper can pledge to eliminate the vote subsidy.
An election issue for sure, and one that will see a majority for the Conservatives. What are the liberals thinking? The liberals are already being blamed for bringing terrorist from backward barbaric countries to our soil and putting Canadians lives at risk. To come out against the human smuggling bill, in favour of the smugglers can only be seen one way. People are going to wonder whose pocket the liberals are in.
ReplyDelete50,000/person is a lot of money for a shipload. Are those smugglers spreading it around to supporters in Canada, or to lobbyists to try to influence opposition government mps to kill the bill.
ReplyDeleteWould the libs have won in Wpg if this was known before the election.
It is hard to believe the Libs do not know that public opinion is 80% in favour of this legislation. They must have a death wish.
ReplyDeleteWatch for this Refugee bill to come up for 2nd reading after the Christmas break as a confidence motion.
Coalition of stooges will try to paint CPC as racists for Bill C-49. They will suggest CPC are over reaching in their attempt to defend the border.
ReplyDeleteThe coalition are stuck trying to steal or hold their shrinking base.
If they can't afford to run tv spots what makes us think they can afford public opinion research?
Are they out of touch with Canadians on the illegal smuggling? Heck yes, and that includes many files.
This can be one of many election issues to beat the silly opposition MPs.
"Liberals" are more concerned with the cult that Pierre created, and his ideological "Charter" than they are about the welfare of the nation. Illegal human smuggling is fine with "Liberals" because the "Pierre Charter" trumps everything, including common sense, and reality. The "Liberal" cult has spoken.
