Today's poll question; do you think that there should be an election call before the end of the fall session of Canadian parliament? I was recently listening to Kelly McParland on the Charles Adler Show (in podcast form available for free on ITunes), and Kelly was suggesting that after the recent byelection results it would be in the Prime Minister's best interest to call an election immediately to catch the Liberals with their pants down around their ankles. His thesis is that things can only get worse going forward; that the economy could worsen, Iggy could suddenly become popular, the Liberals could raise money, etc, etc. So do it now.
I don't want a Christmas Election, but it would only work if the opposition brought down the government. They would have to make the human smuggling bill a confidence motion and fast track it to a vote, hoping that the Liberals stay true to their promise of supporting human smuggling. It has to be by virtue of an opposition non-confidence vote, otherwise there will be a backlash for the government dissolving their mandate at the half way point. But if the government collapsed because the Liberals want to stand up for human smugglers, bonjour Tory majority.

ReplyDeleteI think many of us Conservatives are fed up with the constant BS from the peanut gallery and the opposition benches.
The CPC already have a de facto majority with the Senate and by virtue of Hall Duty of the Liberals MPs during key votes.
Bloc were defeated on Afghan question, F35 got Bloc support. The opposition are divided but like to block crime and law legislation.
If we make C 49 a confidence matter will they run away or show up to defend the illegal immigration industry targeting Canada.
Can we win a numerical majority 20 more in Ontario?
Is this another stunt trying to deflect their poor showing in Vaughan by the LPOC or are did a spine or a pair balls finally drop in place?

ReplyDeleteAll the Conservatives have to do is make the Immigration bill a confidence vote and let the Libs/NDP decide. That ought to be very interesting indeed.
ReplyDeleteThey will be the perps who decide and either way, it's a win-win situation for the Cons. as the public will be ugly and in no mood for an election.
I believe the Libs will throw in their hand on this one, because they are well aware of the poor/non existent numbers which don't favor them.

ReplyDeleteThe Liberals would be stupid to force an election at this moment and I don't think it would be a smart move by the CPC to call one. If the Liberals are smart they will try and defeat the budget, that way if they somehow manage to form government all they need to do to look good to Canadians is have a budget that is less tough then the CPC's is expected to be.

The Liberals say that they will vote this bill down. HOWEVER, if it IS a confidence motion, they will:

b) Vote against it, but tell their MP's to NOT show up for the vote.
If the Tories make Bill C-49 a confidence measure and it's defeated, why would we not blame them for the election? Is there any justification for making it a confidence measure?

ReplyDeleteJonathan, yes there is justification for Bill C-49. It is a good bill and worth fighting an election over for the Conservatives. Because of that the Liberals will not defeat the government over it.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jonathan. That's exactly the message that the opposition parties (and the media) will put out if the bill failed as a confidence motion and we went to an election. I agree that it's a good bill but I'm pretty sure the electoral backlash would be against the Conservatives not against the Opposition, because most Canadians don't want an election.

ReplyDeleteFurthermore 43% of canadians did not voted in the last election.Everyone i knew didnt vote either.Everytime i hear them complain about Harper i ask them did you vote?They say no.So i say well then you cant complain.They grumble and shutup about it after that.
