Green Party Narrowly Defeats Pirate Party

In this week's byelection in Winnipeg North, the Green Party defeated the Pirate Party by just 20 votes. In 2008 the Greens received over one thousand votes in that riding. In 2010 they received 114. Elizabeth May, where have all the cowboys gone? It is no wonder that Lizzy wants to avoid a leadership vote or convention, the Green Party is in trouble. Given that they can barely beat the pirates, is it time we start talking about the Pirate Party getting a seat at the leaders debates in the next election campaign? I think so. If The Greens belong there, we may as well allow the Pirates too. In the 3 byelections combined, the Greens scored a whole 2% of the popular vote (they scored 6% in those ridings in 2008). Congratulations Frank Graves, who has had them in double digits for most of the year. Almost 70,000 voted on Monday. That's 70 times more than your standard EKOS poll.

  1. The green party serves a purpose, they help split the lefts vote 3 ways to Sunday. They have been instrumental in ensuring the left do not gain power in this country. It is all good. As far as them being allowed in the debate, let them in, it just empowers the right, as Canadians see what the alternative is.

  2. Elizabeth May has been a disaster for the Green Party - I would venture to say the Rino Party could have garnered more votes than the Greens. On a slightly less serious note, I love the concept of the Pirate Party. Don`t know what their goals and platform may be but at least Captain Sparrow might bring a little excitment to Canadian politics. cheers

  3. Thanks for pointing this out Iceman! This is exactly what Liberals saying after the by-elections: the next election will be a two horse race - the Conservatives and the Liberals. If you want an alternative to this so-called "conservative", borrow and spend government, social responsibility, action of the environment and climate change, fiscal accountability and strong international relations, you have to vote Liberal in the next election. NDP and the Greens have no chance of bringing you any of these things.

  4. Nope, you are wrong Liberalloser. Way too many ex-liberals now, thanks to Vaughn. Once a liberal takes a chance and votes tory, they don't go back. Trust me I come from a long line of die-hard liberals, cradle to grave liberals. Once they realize how stupid they were, what they were really supporting by voting liberal, they know they will never go back. The liberals are going to have to do a whole whack of crazy shit to entice the ndp and green to vote for them, and by doing so they will force the hanging on liberal faithful to vote blue.

  5. I'm unfortunately not familiar with the Pirate Party, but I like their honesty in the name they chose.

Now if Lizzie May would call her Party the "Enviro-lunatic Party",I'd have a lot more respect for her.

And if Jack Layton called his Party the "Psuedo-Communist Party", I'd have some respect for HIM.

The Bloc: "The Quebec Blackmail Party".

The Liberals: "The Rudderless Party". But I still wouldn't respect Michael Ignatieff, the aristocrat pretending to be one of "us".

  6. Lizzie May is a shrill ninny. I hope she loses very badly in Saanich, as we have enough idiots on Vancouver Island.
