I just saw a commercial on the CBC promoting Egypt as a vacation destination for Canadians. Look, Egypt is on my list of places that I would like to visit before I depart this "mortal coil", but I'm not so sure I'd like to go tomorrow. I'm sure that thousands of Westerners visit Egypt every day without incident, but let's not forget that these are the people who brought us Gamal Abdel Nasser and Bin Laden's #2. I'm not sure that I would like to visit the place where the Muslim Brotherhood is owned and operated, despite the many awe inspiring tourist destinations of the cradle of civilization.
Consider this post my disclaimer to Canadians considering a holiday in Egypt. There may be many majestic sites, but there are also a lot of crazy people. I am certain that the majority of Egyptian people are honourable, but the fringe elements trigger alarm bells in my opinion. Nasser was very popular in Egypt, correct? I'm not sure that I trust Mubarak. He doesn't really do any TV, so I don't read a whole lot about him. Either way, he is in all likelihood far better than the alternative.
Egypt; eventually I will be visiting, but not tomorrow.
Yes, Iceman, Egypt has its troubles. But for a big--and poor and overcrowded--city I would much sooner take my chances in Cairo than in most others. Bob in Ottawa
