Predictions For 2011

With the end of 2010 at hand, it is time to start making predictions for 2011. What do you think is going to happen? A spring election might be the most obvious prediction, followed by a Bob Rae coup for Liberal leadership. Though I suspect that the coup will come after a failed election bid, an election that Iggy's opponents are likely insisting take place. Will Jim Flaherty significantly reduce the deficit? Will planned cuts to business taxes be implemented? It likely is not a bold prediction that Dalton Mcguinty will lose this fall. I'd like to launch the poll this afternoon, your suggestions are welcome.

  1. I predict that there will be an federal election in the spring.
The Cons will gain a majority Government and the Liberals will get less than 50 seats.

  2. My prediction for the U.S.:

"Austerity" -- a word already popular in Europe -- will become the dominant force in America. It will cause immense political conflict.

  3. Yesterday Fox news had an interview with a New York congressman who is very worried re the tax cuts in Canada. They were praised by him, and the Fox anchor. He is worried that they might entice businesses from his state to move north. 16.5% compared to 35% is a huge difference. He mentioned one bank that has already set up offices in Ontario.
I don't think Canadians are ready for more social programs and higher taxes that a liberal or coalition govt would bring.
I agree with Ron, we will get a majority and I hope it is by at least 15 seats. My wish is for the liberals to lose party status but that probably wont happen. I don't see them making any gains in the west and they probably will lose a few in BC.

  4. McGuinty will fall so low in the polls that Liberals will have an 11th hour leadership convention to try and salvage their butts in the face of a rout.

Do not underestimate the ability of the people of Ontario (read Toronto) to shoot themselve's in the foot. With Hudak as the PC leader Mike Harris will be brought out at every opportunity to scare the centre of the universe into voting liberal. I happen to think Mike Harris was a plus but what do I know!

  7. Calgary Mayor Naheed Menshi will insert himself into the Calgary Centre-North by-election, calling on voters to vote for the candidate who promises to transfer more federal tax revenue to the city.

He will flex his muscles by not-so-secretly instructing his "purple army" of volunteers to campaign for whichever leftie candidate has the best chance of winning.

  8. “Calgary Mayor Naheed Menshi will insert himself into the Calgary Centre-North by-election, calling on voters to vote for the candidate who promises to transfer more federal tax revenue to the city.”

Good! I hope Rob Ford is reading this and recognizes there is only one taxpayer in Toronto but there are 3 levels of government with their hands in my wallet. A better way to phrase this is:
“call on voters to vote for the candidate who promises to stop equalization transfers out of Toronto and out of Ontario.”

  9. I think Iggy will leave before the next election. He will say he has a health problem and/or a position will be found for him. Bob Rae will take over and the MSM will find this completely normal (crickets chirping).

Someone will take a shot at Barack Obama and hopefully will miss. If they succeed Hilary Clinton will be the next president after Joe Biden serves in the interim.

  10. There will be a federal election in 2011,the Conservatives will once again form a minority government as Ontario votes Liberal and NDP once again.

Ignatieff will be requested to step down and the Liberal convention will be reported breathlessly by all TV networks as they search for a Canadian Obama.

The only shots taken at Obama will be of the verbal variety, and the MSM will continue to lie about the effects of the QE 2,3,4.

The world will carry on as usual,Iran,North Korea,Russia,China,Middle East all doing the same things that they love to do,while various factions in Europe and North America cry an "End of the world as we know it" scenario, none of which will happen.

  11. Okay here goes.

There will not be a federal election in the spring, heres why (subjective opinion of course).
Flaherty will table a budget that the few remaining blu-libs in caucus and Iggy will see as enough of a "fig-leaf" to let pass. This will be too much for the rest of the lib caucus to stomach and they will sign an agreement in principle to sit as a caucus with the NDP. Harper will not force an election but allow this sore to fester in the liberal fold right through the Ontario election. Once a formal merger talks begin, thats when Harper will table a confidence motion on elimination of the $1.95 per vote subsidy. The new lib-NDP party which has never run a candidate will be ineligable until it runs in a federal election, and the remaining liberal party will not survive without it, the elephant in the room will be that under the circumstances neither can campaign to keep it, or allow Harper to win a confidence vote to eliminate it.
    No election in 2011.
