Who Should Be The Deputy?

With Tom Clark musing about John Baird's #2 status in the Conservative Party, I ask who would you select to be Deputy Prime Minister if it were up to you? Lawrence Cannon may have the designation officially, but one could argue that Jim Flaherty has the second most important job in the Government. Stockwell Day was the leader before Stephen Harper, and Tony Clement ran for the leadership of the newly united Conservative Party. Jason Kenney has one of the sharpest intellects in the Commons, and Maxime Bernier is arguably the most popular Conservative in the province of Quebec. Peter MacKay was the former deputy leader as the last boss of the federal PC Party who merged with the Canadian Alliance to unite the right.

So who do you think should be the deputy?

Peter MacKay
John Baird
Jim Flaherty
Tony Clement
Lawrence Cannon
Jason Kenney
Maxime Bernier
Stockwell Day

  1. Peter MacKay. Young, charismatic, competent.

  2. I like Peter when a LONG, LONG time from now the memebership will be asked to make another decision.
It's his to lose in my estimation!

  3. Stockwell Day...no nonsense...hard worker...learned tough lessons....

  4. I'll always support Peter MacKay. Its easy to forget where we were not so many years ago. He has always acted responsibly and competently. I know he would make a good PM.

Maxime has the right ideas though. I have to say that I like him.

They both are good looking. Both had girl troubles (who hasn't?). Both are valuable eastern MPs.

All Peter has to do is to be more Libertarian and he will succeed. See, Democracy does work. I love the CPC.

  5. I notice you did not have Mr. Prentice on the list. He would have been my choice, though he would not be a successor as the Country likely would not want more than one PM in a row from the same city.

  6. If we're looking at future leaders:

Peter MacKay -- He's been around for a long time, is very competent/smart, and is a good communicator and listener. He's charismatic and presents a warm image, something we need in the Conservative Party. (He could have communicated the Afghan detainees issue better though)
John Baird -- Competent, but too much of a pitbull and too belligerent.
Jim Flaherty -- A strong finance minister. He would be third on my choice for PM after Harper and MacKay.
Tony Clement -- Competent, but not particularly charismatic.
Lawrence Cannon -- Competent, but too liberal for my tastes.
Jason Kenney -- Competent, but again, not particularly charismatic.
Maxime Bernier -- He might have the right ideas, but there's something about him I can't put my finger on. Perhaps he doesn't seem mature enough? I don't know, I can't see him as a Prime Minister right now.
Stockwell Day -- I like him a lot but he's had his shot at leadership.

Anyway, I'm very happy with Stephen Harper.

  7. Come to think of it, Prentice should have been on the list. Next time.

  8. Frank Dimant is telling everyone that he is the next Senator to be appointed by PMSH. Why not make him #2 from the Senate.

  9. Looks like we have an excellent "team" whatever way you look at it.... Peter MacKay is my pick....but I am from Nova Scotia - maybe a bit bias!

  10. Day has done a great job, his manpurse could start a new trend for urban MPs.

I like a rookie MP Shelley Glover for deputy PM she is not from any camp of reform, alliance, PC.

    She represent the next generation.

She put in the hard work well before the campaign and took back a long held Liberal riding.

Large family, bilingual does not like the BS in Ottawa.

Staying to long is Ottawa breeds culture of entitlement.

The CPC should have a retirement program after 15 years of service in Ottawa.

  11. MacKay. If it weren't for his brave sacrifice to do what's right we'd still have the Liberals running the show.

He's done a good job with no scandals. Young, charismatic, plus he's from the east coast where he might be able to pick us up a few more seats.

  12. Diane Ablonczy. The most under-utilized Conservative resource!

  13. No one.

I think it is smart of PM Harper not to have a Deputy Prime Minister.

  14. I agree with the poster who said Diane Ablonczy. I think she is one of the most talented MP's in the Conservative caucus and she is definitely under-utilized. However, she cannot be Deputy PM because she is from Calgary, the same city/province/region as Harper so there is a representation issue there.

  15. Either Jason Kenney or Stockwell Day. Both are competent at what they do and both are intelligent. I also think Kenney is definitely a future leadership contender versus Peter McKay.

  16. What an embarrassment of HR riches! So many good people so much hard work to do still.
