Name That Network

We should soon know whether the CRTC will grant the Quebecor bid to start a new 24 news network in Canada, in what has been nicknamed "Koryvision" or "Fox News North". What should it be called? I am assuming that the Fox Network will not be involved in this measure, so calling them Fox News North is unlikely plausible. One of my colleagues already asked this question, and some of the suggestions were News Canada, Real News, and CANTV. Personally I like the Canadian World News Network.

I don't think it would be wise to name the network Koryvision. Do you have any ideas? I would like this to be the theme of a poll question.

UPDATE: This morning they announced that it will be named Sun TV.

  2. I don't think Quebecor have the stations from a geographical point of coverage to be called Canadian.

My limited research looks like mainly Quebec with some Ontario stations.

I have not seen or read the submission as to exactly what this new product will be focused on beyond some tweets.

Will they cover the suburbs, rural news, lead with stories outside the major cities?

Will it have international economic stories that are informative?

Will the journalism be similar to what is currently available soundbites and gothcha journalism?

Will it have the feel of local-regional news with an emphasis of timely events?

Where will the news be sourced, how will it be delivered?

Is this station going to be a 24/7 news only station, or will additional programming be made available?

Will this station go deeper cover local, provincial political events?

Select politicians get interviews in their ridings and key issues.

Mr. Bean's real name is Rowan Atkinson (he was my third pick after Jim Carrey#2) # 1 is dead like M.I.'s political career.

  3. No suggestions from me, I'm afraid, though I do have a few observations:

News Canada sounds like a government agency, which would not only send out the wrong message, but would play into the hands of those who believe the network could be a Conservative Party mouthpiece.

Real News is already being used by an American web-based network.

CANTV is ugly and unimaginative. Watch for the jokes revolving around "can't".

Sadly, Canadian World News Network, the best of the batch, doesn't really work either. For one, it sounds like a Canadian arm of the already existing World News Network. Also, does it not seem a bit too similar to the recently dropped Newsworld name? Is CWNN not a bit to close to CNN?

  7. For your question "Which actor would you cast to play Ignatieff?" I would pick someone else: Crispin Glover, the father ("You are my density") from "Back to the Future."

  10. I like Sun News as a name. *Sun* in itself is a positive, feel good word that we here in the west haven't seen enough of. Rain, rain, rain ... some Sun would be welcomed by all :)
