Ignatieff Crying With Wolves

I don't think the Liberal Party heeded the ominous warnings during the fall session that by turning every little potential controversy (imagined and otherwise) into a massive over-dramatization of a sky falling scenario; they risked people tuning them out via something called diminishing marginal returns. People take each successive imagined controversy less seriously than the one before it. Now the Liberals prepare to stage a stunt right before the Olympics at a time when they should be struggling to get attention. I would like to do a webpoll asking which stunt you would like to see Liberals attempt during the Parliamentary vigils. I was thinking that Mike could jump over a shark on water skis. Or instead of jumping a shark, he could attempt to jump over his caucus in a motorcycle. We can call it "jump the caucus".

I am looking for ideas, mostly sarcastic, for attention grabbing publicity stunts that the Liberals can attempt in the 19 days before the Olympics to get their faces on TV. Visitor feedback is strongly encouraged.

  1. Hold a phony Nuremberg trial?

  2. Iggy and Rae need to chain themselves to a pillar inside Parliament and refuse to leave until Parliament resumes.

  3. McCallum can go out on the roof and threaten to jump unless Parliament resumes immediately.

  4. How about a mass candle-light leap over Niagara Falls by the entire Liberal caucus.

  5. He could read Tolstoy to his caucus like he said he did last Christmas for his wife. Or War and Peace.
He likes to lecture and he likes to imagine himself as some kind of emblem of a grand old historic Russian dynasty. He is not much into Canadian present and future as he calls himself a "Peasonian" Liberal - back to the 60's is where his understanding of our country is stuck.

Andrew Coyne can drive the hearse.

  7. Iggy will resign. Bob Rae will become leader. This will atrack all the MSM, even upstage a gold medal if they wait 'till the Olympics. Any thing that Iggy said agaist the military will be moot as Rae will distance him self form the comments.

  8. John Mcallum will give up drinking if the house will go back to work.

In other news, bright pink pigs flew by my window this morning as I had tea with the Dhali Lama.

  9. I feel like some pundits like Coyne and Martin made a career off being opposed to government during the 12 years of Liberal rule, and they can never shake that goose that laid their golden egg.

  10. Iggy will rant and rave about the terrible Conservatives and then vote with the Conservatives on the Throne Speech and Budget. Do politicians have any moral compass?

  11. The liberals will vote nonconfidence or they may not.
    But here's something to consider.
If word got out that Iggy or Rae where going to try to pull the coalition stunt again, how many nervous lib MP's would there be?
    Here's my point.
Seems when it comes down to crunch time the GG does as the PM advises.
So regardless of what confidence motion it is, I thoroughly expect Harper will add the wording up front that a vote of nonconfidence means there will be an election.
There is also more at work here than just whether there is or is not an election.
The left of the liberal party that has seen its influence take a hit is now in a panic.
See there are four outcomes of an election.
Cons majority, cons minority, lib minority, lib majority.
Cons win majority - Iggy leaves for Harvard and the next lib leadership is off and running but with the unsurety of a omov selection system (so much for that unwritten rule of alternation)
Cons win minority - no change but with the blu-lib caucus around Harper can still get his conservaitve legislation through parliament.
Lib minority - Iggy PM, and more likely to reach out to the conservative side of the house to get legislation through, which would stick in the craw of the left caucus but they would shut up because they where in power, just like when Martin was PM.
Lib majority - the lefty caucus feels its outs and works to undermine Iggy and force him to move left.
Its all speculation mind you, but if the libs can't manage a majority then the left will start reconsidering its options if they can't regain control.
So the libs may vote yes they may vote no, but if it looks like they can't change the game by then, look for the NDP poll numbers start to rise by mid-feb.
