Bad News Polls

According to the latest polling data, the Liberals and the Tories are in a virtual tie at 30%. It is interesting that while the Tories are down 10% since October, the Liberals are only up 2%. Have a million Tory voters just defected to the NDP and Greens? Or did a million Liberals break off to the left, and a million Tories switched to the Grits? I'm looking at the numbers trying to figure out where the votes went. Oh well, we will see where the numbers go when news spreads that Canadian diplomats had warned the Martin government several times of abuse in Afghan prisons prior to his administration drafting a deal to transfer POWs into Afghani custody. The fact that they did not provide proper Red Cross oversight into the process despite warnings of abuse would suggest either gross incompetence or depraved indifference. It will be interesting to see how Bob Rae handles this.

Evan Soloman obviously did not discuss these revelations at all today. After the first hour of constant coverage on the Haiti crisis, I was not going to criticize his omission of the bad news for the Liberal Party. The Haiti Earthquake was a terrible tragedy and worthy of a significant amount of news coverage. But then Evan found the time to squeeze in Kevin Page for a segment about long term structural deficits. Evan ever the opportunist.

On the polls, even if they really do reflect true voter intentions, so be it. Now let's enjoy the Olympics!

  1. I know. Let's have an inquiry into the handling of detainees. And to be fair, let's have the inquiry cover the years 2002 to present.

What's that? The Liberals and NDP already asked for that? What? They actually even passed a motion in Parliament asking for that full an inquiry? Say what again? Bob Rae has been in the news many times already over the last several months saying we can only get a good understanding of what was happening by investigating from 2002 to present? And Harper still refuses any inquiry?

Boy. From that you might think someone wasn't afraid of the truth and someone was trying to bury it.

  2. Curiously neither CTV nor CBC has this poll as a top story, you actually have to search for it....
let's hope this poll encourages Iffy to once again say
    Harper your time is up!
    Election April 2010....

  3. Ted:
The liberals apparently heard the same info but did nothing. Harper's government was in office for approx 4 months and a new agreement on transfers was completed.
The issue was resolved, real or based on heresy, was resolved.
So what is it you want?
The redacted info containing the places and names of Afghan informants perhaps?
Bet the Taliban would just love that going public.
Putting our troops in danger just so liberal grandstanding could be accommodated.
That costs more than a few million on an inquiry, a cost I would not be willing to take a chance on.

  4. Hey Ted, I have been waiting to find you commenting here...just want to correct your comments that Harper prorogued three times - only twice, sweetie.

When parliament ended for the election - it was a dissolution.

  5. Um, Alberta Girl? Off in your own world again? Where did I say Harper prorogued Parliament 3 times??? Obviously, he hasn't.

I may have said he is the first PM to prorogue Parliament twice in a year because, as far as I am aware, he is.

And I certainly said he is the only PM to shut down Parliament 3 times in 16 months in order to avoid the House because, well, he is.

But I've never said he prorogued Parliament 3 times.

  6. "Putting our troops in danger just so liberal"

So why did Harper fight so hard to prevent the MPCC from doing its work, Gimbol? Intimidating witnesses, censoring documents, fighting court orders.

The MPCC was designed specifically for this kind of thing: investigate internally, outside the public eye, with full security clearance but military responsibility for confidentiality.

The only reason this ever came to Parliament is because Harper wouldn't let the MPCC do its job.

And then he goes and fires the chair!?! Mr. Accountability he certainly is no longer.

  7. Actually Ted, one was in 2008 and one was in 2009, and they were more than 365 days apart. So no, technically he did not prorogue twice in the same year. I know what a stickler you are for accurate statements.

  8. Iceman,

I appreciate your civility and willingness tonight to have a, what do you call it, a genuine discussion.

Gonna finish up some work and head home now.

    Have a good night.

  9. Always a pleasure Ted. I am reminded of those old cartoons with Wylie Coyote and the sheep dog...

  10. You are too self-deprecating. I wouldn't have compared you to Wile E. Don't be so hard on yourself.

  11. Te, I take it from your comments that the current govt. has something to hide..extrapolating from that, what would that 'something' be?

Don't be shy, you know you want to say it...

  13. Well TEd...you are like the liberals - you must have short term memory block...I actually challenged you and you and Gayle came back at me with the 3 times - one of which was the election.

"Another fact for you Kit. With the Harper Holiday, Harper has shut down Parliament for the third time in 16 months. Over the last 4 decades, Parliament has sat for an average of 145-150 days per year. Harper in 2009? Just barely over 100."

This is one of the MANY times I found you saying it in the blogesphere.

You need to start playing some of those brain age games, because you really seem to be short on the memory.

  14. Well AlbertaGirl...you are like, well, I don't think you are like anyone I know - you must have extremely short term memory block...I actually explained that right here just a few comments up.

Maybe it's not a memory problem you have but a reading comprehension problem. You really should take some remedial education for it.

And you really didn't need to spend all that time tracking down an old quotation of mine because I said the exact same thing up above and I'll keep saying it again.

When he prorogued in December, Harper had shut down Parliament 3 times in the prior 16 months. 2 for prorogation and 1 time for an election he called on a whim. Nothing unfactual about that.

However, there is something very unfactual about claiming I said that he had prorogued 3 times. Because I have never said that.

  15. Come on Ted, let's try to keep those punches above the belt. Don't be Andrew Golota.

  16. Fair comment, Ice.

There's a bit of history. AlbertaGirl stalks me, like she admitted up above, and then makes accusations that I said something which I haven't, like she did up above, and then disappears when she is once again shown to be making stuff up.

It is annoying and mildly frustrating. But you are right, I shouldn't return her insults with insults. I don't need to stoop to her level.

  17. No matter, once a post is a day old most casual civilians are on to the next thing. The only people that come back are the people who left the comments.

I like Alberta Girl. Her heart is in the right place. Do you even have a heart Ted? You're like the Tin Man and Iggy is your wonderful wizard!

I need to take a break to finish Harry Potter. This movie is fucking terrible...

Oh, and you were doing so well, Ice, with the civility and "no shots below the belt". Ah, well, a leopard can't change its spots and for Conservatives it's always "our principles don't apply to us".

    ;-)

P.S. Don't let your fellow cons know you are reading HP. They will worry about your soul and all the liberal witchcraft you are studying.

  19. Nick Nanos is the most credible pollster...The 30% tie between the Libs and Conservatives reported by Ekos to the Globe and Mail paper seems rather suspect to me.

The Globe and Mail employs very biased reporters.
