The PC "Nostalgia Race"

In my web poll of which former Conservative leader would you appoint to the PMO if you had the power; Preston Manning is starting to make a charge. My candidate Mike Harris is still holding the lead while Ralph Klein and Bernard Lord are drifting in the wings looking to "pull a Dion". Evidently neither Joe Clark or Kim Campbell read my blog, unless they are so ashamed of their tenure that they voted for somebody else?

  1. I voted for Mike Harris but I do not think he would win Ontario. He did not explain himself while in power let alone after he left power.

  2. I agree, I was dissapointed in the manner of his departure, but judging him as a Premier I was 90% satisfied with the job he did. He stood up to some pretty vicious unions, and that wears anybody down over time.

  3. I’d agree with the above posts.

Mike Harris was a great leader, and truly a great politician. He set out his goals, and he accomplished them. His problem was that he didn’t take into account social as well as the political repercussions of his actions. He didn’t talk to the people (as is stated above) and he didn’t come across as caring. (ie all the cuts with no explanations and no exceptions). The Ontario Liberals had a nice pot of cash to burn through when he left office though, from all the ‘horrible’ cuts. And they sure used that cash, because well, it’s gone! And Ontario is getting equalization money from the Feds and running a deficit of $13 billion to boot! And Mike Harris is seen as a bad guy?

  4. You have left the best one off the list: Peter Lougheed.
