I'm starting to understand why Obama is so determined to double down on Afghanistan despite the growing opposition to the conflict by his own base. Pacifist blowhards like Maher and Moore are openly opposed to any military action in Afghanistan, and are befuddled that Obama would escalate the conflict. As we see Obama's poll numbers sinking faster than the lost city of Atlantis, his policies seem destined to fail despite super majorities in parliament. If Obama wants to pass his agenda, much less get re-elected, he needs a major victory to shore up support at home.
Can you think of any higher accomplishment than killing or capturing Bin Laden? Honestly, that would virtually guarantee his re-election and I think Obama knows this. I fully expect his troop surge to press the border with Waziristan while Pakistan pushes from the south. Lorne Gunter pointed out the irony of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to a President who is escalating his country's military conflicts. I agree.
Iceman - What makes you think that bin Laden is still alive?
ReplyDeleteUntil we see a corpse, we have to assume that he is.
ReplyDeleteThis is where you err on the side of caution. Two realities exist, either he's dead or alive. If he is alive and you give up the man hunt because you think he might be dead, that is folly. You have to behave as though he is still alive until you can prove that he's dead. Even if he is dead, somebody in Wazaristan is running Command and Control. Cut the head off the snake.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The reason I asked was due to a comment made by Benezir Bhutto, regarding bin Laden's killer.
