I read the "op-ed" by Bison in today's National Post. I would link it directly, but I don't want Scott to get my "exit links". If you want to read it you will have to look it up on www.nationalpost.com. I have no problem with the Post publishing these rants, because I do consider the descenting opinion to be necessary in reporting "fair and balanced" news. But Scotty and his rant on the Conservative mishandling of "Buy American" was just wrong. He says that the Tories didn't do anything about it when Pelosi first snuck it into the "stimulus" bill. Infact Stockwell Day was fighting this right from the beginning. He was doing radio shows, and voicing our concerns through the proper diplomatic channels.
The inconvenient truth for Canadian left wingers is that it is the American left wing that wants to close the border to trade. The right wingers are the strongest advocates for free trade, American or Canadian. The bottom line is regardless of what agreement is signed, or which international trade regulator is cited, we can't force the Americans to do anything that they don't want to do, and they really want to do this. Remember when "Buy American" first hit? Do you remember Scott the voices clamoring from your left flank that not only approved of "Buy American" they were encouraging "Buy Canadian" as an appropriate response? Interesting to speculate how the government of Canada might have responded to this breaking issue had the Coalition Coup been successful?

Here is what this Economist had to say about free trade and protectionism when as you say, it mattered. Yes, I know that Economics-speak can be boring at the best of times, but I do my best to spice it up with pop culture references.
Perhaps the Liberals have been busing picking cherries in Narnia.
ReplyDeleteScott and the critics love to ignore the progress and only report the negative information.
Scott Brison, was a Joe Clarke PC. That says it all and as far as I am concerned, he fits in perfectly with the ranting, never happy, Liberals.
ReplyDeleteBesides, they needed someone to guide them through the role of the Opposition but unfortunately as with everything else, SB seems to have failed at that too. He's a horrible communicator, imo.
