Charles Adler: "I love my country, I don't love the United Nations"

Charles Adler delivered a fantastic monologue yesterday about Canada being denied a seat on the United Nations Security Council. He discusses how we have fallen out of favour with a group of countries for taking a stand in support of human rights in places like Iran. According to Charles, "they feel that Canada is too pro American or too pro Israeli and so they don't vote for Canada, and I think that's great! We should wear their scorn proudly". I strongly recommend listening.

To listen, visit charlesadler.com and click on Oct 12th pt 1 in his audio vault (located in the cellphone graphic on the right hand side). There is also a great rant on today's show. Click on Oct 13th Hour 1 and fast forward to the 10 minute mark.

  1. Why Is the U.S. Snubbing Another Ally It So Desperately Needs at the U.N.?

The Obama team worked with Canadian liberals to leave Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s conservative government hanging without vocal U.S. support.

At other times, vocal American support was needed to highlight a priority U.S. issue. In Canada’s case, Rice chose to say nothing publicly and declined to lead a global campaign on behalf of our northern neighbor. Her silence also seemed politically coordinated when Canadian Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff criticized his own country’s policies on climate change and its staunch support for Israel – policies the Obama team disagrees with.

  4. I have a number of thoughts on this topic.

First, Mr. Ignatieff demonstrated that he does not possess leadership potential. Although I disagree with Canada wanting to be on the Security Council, once the Government declared that it sought a seat, Mr. Ignatieff should have come out in SUPPORT of our efforts instead of working against us. Then when we lost, he could claim that even his support was insufficient to overcome the mistakes made by the Tories, etc., etc., etc. A smart politician would never denigrate his country in front of others for the lure of cheap political gain.

Second, Mr. Ignatieff's hypocrisy had a negligible, or zero, effect on the outcome. In my opinion, Canada lost because of its support for Israel and its standing on human rights. We should be proud.

Third, we were given no assistance from the United States in lobbying the delegates. That reality shows the direction President Obama wishes to steer his country in foreign policy.

Fourth, Mr. Obama has now effectively handed Security Council control to Europe and excluded the Americas. We have the United Kingdom, and France as permanent members, who are now joined by Germany and Portugal.

We should let this furor die down, then quietly work to have the U.N dismantled.

  5. and don't forget this is the one that all canadians in Canada wanted as the President. when there was a poll. Because they were so anti Bush. I bet if Bush were in there we would have had a ally.

  6. If Conservatives beleieve the UN is a waste of time then why is Canada the 7th largest contributor of funds. Harper should take back the Canadian money and use it to pay down his record deficit.

  7. The process is in the works as we speak and as a contributor of funds to every and all nations continuously with their hands out for "sheckles" is about to come to a halt and rightfully so.
We don't need the UN and their cabal of despots.
Why is it perfectly sensible people cannot grasp this fact?
    Just say "NO!"
