Worst Political Disaster of the Decade?

I am preparing my poll for the worst political disaster of the 2000s, and I would like some feedback to make sure that I'm not forgetting anything.  Thus far I have ten nominees, but I would like to knock that down to maybe 7, so anything that you should nominate needs to bump something already there.  Worst disaster can mean either a specific event, or a sequence of unfortunate events.  I mostly focus on North America, but included the Bhutto assassination because that had a direct impact to the fortunes of the men and women of our Armed Forces.  Here are my nominees:

The Gomery Inquiry
The Stephane Dion Experiment
McCain chooses Palin
Howard Dean, Yeah!
John Kerry
FEMA and Katrina
The Governator
Dalton McGuinty
Assassination of Benazir Bhutto
Government Subsidized Mortgages

  1. I don't think McCain chooses Palin belongs on the list.

Before her there was very little enthusiasm, fundraising, volunteers on the Republican side - all the grassroots stuff you need to run an election.

Plus its important to remember that up until the collapse of the stock market McCain and Palin were AHEAD in the polls.

  2. I don't see Gomery as a disaster. More like a winfall.

Palin was, is, and will be the disaster that empowers Obama and his ilk. As long as she is around to draw support away from legitimate and electable republicans, the democrats will have their way much more easily.

A democrat-socialist governed US is a disaster for the whole world. That's bad enough, but in my eyes the worst political disaster of the last decade has been the relentless progress of the EU, a socialist borg-like entity, despite the efforts of citizens to escape this nondemocratic bureaucracy. The EU empowers socialism and shuts down liberty wherever it goes. Look at its impact on free speech, immigration, "human rights" rulings, and be very afraid that those same policies will come to North America.

  3. Well, you can add "Republicans pick McCain".

"Americans elect Obama" I know that one seems premature, but the Nobel committee didn't think it was premature awarding him the Peace prize after only six weeks in office.

Looks like a pretty good list so far!

  4. I figured "McCain chooses Palin" might rile a few people. :) I never liked McCain and did not support him at any stage of the primary process. His "the fundamentals are strong" speech the morning before the markets collapsed was the biggest mistake of 2008 for the Republicans.

    RUDY 2012!!!

  5. I should put "Republicans not nominating Giuliani" on the list...

  6. I was ok with McCain - Palin especially after I saw the CNN special about McCain. Gomery was only disastrous to the Liberal side, so I too see it as a boon, not a boondoggle.

But McGuinty is a disaster that continues to be disastrous. A BILLION for NOTHING, 1.2 Billion in benefit overpayments (considering we don't do due diligence how does the AG know its only 1.2 billion) The Caledonian affair (no police protection for law abiding citizens) The HST, the Health Tax, the Have not status of the economic engine of Canada, The Sheeple of Ontario voting him in again and again...

I mean, to Canada the destruction of the economic engine of the country, that has to rate somewhat significant.

Thank you Dalton for not standing by and continuing to devastate Ontario with policy after policy. Only Migabe has done worse with an effective and rich region of the world.

Until Obama is done, that is

  7. Well said Kerry. I enjoy it when you remind me why I have endorsed you as the next Mayor of Renfrew. McCain chooses Palin will not be in the poll, I just put it there to be an asshole.

    RUDY 2012!

  8. Kerry,

To be fair Ontario has faced similiar challenges to Michigan, Ohio and has suffered a simliar fate, so the long term structural changes in the economy are not McGuinty's fault in and of themselves.

Nor am I sure that people have the stomach for the kind of changes nessecary to revive Ontario's economy.

Far lower tax rates, especially on investments and corporations, aggressive expansion of hydro development without concern for the greenies/native protests, and finally taking a giant sledgehammer to the auto sector unions to make the sector competetive with asian countries and southern states.

  9. Ha ha, WHOOO HOOO, I'm on the 'A' list. Not sure I like to fail but I won't VOTE for myself.

Secondary, Iceman my friend, you really need to get over this Sarah stuff. She WILL be moving some mountains and it is still to be determined, how far.

I do not see Obama on there as a disaster and it should be.

Should you not adjust the obvious boo boos (teee heeee),the "Governator",because based on your current polling suggestions, that is definitely the stupidest thing that has occurred in North American politics, EVER imo.
He is married to a tried and true Democrat....it was flippin' bound to rub off... eventually, between her and Oprah, the guy never had a chance! HE IS A DISASTER!
