Calgary or Edmonton?

The more that I think about it, the more certain I am that I will be moving to Alberta after the Olympics. I am already paying a carbon tax, and I refuse to pay an HST on top of it. I fled Ontario before Dalton could unleash his scorched earth on that Province, and now I am sitting here in Gordon Campbell's Vancouver looking east. When I drove from Ontario to British Columbia 5 years ago, I should have stopped in Calgary and settled down.

Where should I move to after the Olympics? I'll put that up to a poll, because I do prefer the Oilers over the Flames and will consider Edmonton as a viable option. Also in terms of hits per capita, I am disproportionately popular in Whitehorse. Though to be honest, I prefer the anonymity of the big city. If making your way in the world today takes everything you've got, I'd like to go where nobody knows my name, and they don't give a shit I came. (ps that was a spin on the Cheers theme song)

  1. Give us an idea of what you like to do on your time off, because jobs for someone with an honours degree in Mathematical Economics are a fit anywhere in Alberta.

    Ski- Calgary closer to Banff
    Quad/skidoo- Edmonton
    Acreage life- Edmonton (cheaper)
Garden/yard- longer growing season in Calgary

  2. Again, on some web browsers you have to vote twice to vote once. I don't know why, but when you first click on vote on some computers, it shows you the results instead of registering your vote.

  3. Good decision Iceman. I'm in the autumn of my years so I'll stay put here in Ontario despite it's stupid politics. If I were a young man I'd head for Calgary. I love that city. I've lived and worked in three provinces, Alberta Quebec and Alberta. Great province and a politically sensible one too.

  5. I had a idea of going to Calgary when I was taking my Business Admin - International Business. But I got involved again in the family business and then local politics as my life gleefully took me where I need to be.

I still look wistfully west time to time, to that beacon of sanity nestled near the Rockies. Truth is, like so many, I have the Ottawa Valley in my blood, and a stubborn desire to work with others to defeat the insanity found in Ontario.

I guess I'd feel like I quit the fight while I was able, even if I joined the movements out in the frontier of sane political thought.

I guess I'm committed for the duration, but Ice, I will visit you in the promised land of Alberta someday.

  6. Golf? I'd say Calgary then, they have a bit of a longer season. But both places have top notch courses.

  7. My son was planning on moving from Edmonton to Calgary when I told him to enjoy the seasons of Calgary.

A few years later he was reversing the move. In his words he enjoyed Calgary's four seasons but he didn't enjoy having them every bloody day!

  8. That's the good and bad about being in chinook country Joe.

Edmonton has a longer growing season than Red Deer, RD is between Calg and Edm, a strange thing eh.

  9. If you come to Calgary, can you please run for Mayor?
Our socialist Bronco, is a real drag!

  10. Why don't you ask us Albertans if we want you? I seem to recall that your favourite NHL team was the Red Wings. We don't like the Red Wings here in Calgary so go to Edmonton.

  11. McGuinty and Miller the Miserable Men mincing up Ontario will soon be out. Iceman, give a thought to coming back to Ontario.
Sometimes, when I get too frustrated with the situation in Toronto, I say things like "let's move to Alberta" or "let's migrate again and move to Texas".
We badly need a Conservative majority to turn thing around and make Canada once again into a sane country.

  12. Albertaguy, if you don't want a Red Wings fan (who is also a mathematician who could add value to your economic output) then just click for me to stay in Vancouver.
