I am assuming that there are more than a few people this holiday season who will not be working in the next few days. If you are looking to rent a movie and you think District 9 is something you might be interested in, then it would likely be worth your while to rent it and watch it. The film is a far cry from Lord of the Rings, but if you enjoy science fiction you should enjoy this. In so far as alien invasion movies are concerned, this was pretty much par for the course. Not as good as Independence Day, similar to War of the Worlds, and far better than Signs.
I don't really want to discuss the plot because I imagine that a few people will be renting this week. All that I would like to say is that it is a decent flick, there is some blood and guts, but it should entertain you while making you think. When I return this to the video store, it is the last time that I will spend money to watch or acquire this film. I really don't have anything else compelling to say about this movie. It might be interesting, but it is not inspiring.
The signficance of this film is, Peter Jackson proved you can have a hit with unkowns if the film is of quality standard.
ReplyDeleteSo long mega box ofice movie star, hello low budget foreign films.
Avatar with all it's positive reviews still has to break over $300 million ( read that it was closer to $500 million) before it returns a profit.
I watched it on Wednesday evening, enjoyed it myself. Won't go out and buy it, but was worth the rental on Blu-Ray. 'some blood and guts' is an understatement however.
ReplyDeleteMost importantly of the movie however was yesterday's post, I too was irritated to see the ad for MJ's documentary, and hit the skip button as soon as I realized what it was. The sad thing, people 10 years from now will throw this disc into their player and still have to deal with it
Oh dear, I thought Independance Day was hilarious in a bad movie sort of way.
ReplyDeleteAll things considered, it's a pretty provocative film.
ReplyDeleteThere's a strong message in the film about the kind of shenanigans that can easily ensue when insufficient controls are levied on the arms industry.
Then, of course, there are the racial overtones of the film.
Simply too much to discuss in any one particular place.
