Bob Rae To Retire?

I was just browsing the blogosphere, and saw a rumour reported by the Toronto Star that Bob Rae is preparing to retire from federal politics? I don't really believe it, considering Iggy is at point where 60% of Liberals want a new leader. Doesn't Bobby still want that job? That's why at age 60 he suddenly dumped the NDP to join the Liberal party, because somebody convinced him that he could become Prime Minister and he wanted that job. Then after Dion's failed coup, Bobby and Iggy negotiated a backroom deal where Rae forfeited contesting Ignatieff for the leader's office. I watched the 2006 Liberal leadership convention. Bobby really wanted that job. What was his deal with Ignatieff?

Iggy and Rae had one thing in common. They both started campaigning for the job of Prime Minister the moment that they decided to become Liberal candidates (not unlike Belinda Stronach). They both had their eye on the prize from the word go. Now Iggy is on the verge of revolt and allegedly Bobby is going to walk away? Is it that he doesn't want to be seen as involved in Iggy's ouster and he will return to run for the job again when Count Chocula is gone? Or is Bobby giving up his ambition of becoming Prime Minister? Regardless of whether or not Bobby steps down before the end of 2010, I fully expect him to be running for Iggy's job after Iggy goes back to Boston.

  1. Rae, might want it, but the liberal party won't allow it because of his wife being Jewish. Remember the dust up at the last liberal leadership drive. The liberals count on the hate Israel crowd for votes.

  2. Rae can’t deliver Ontario that remembers him as Premier. No Liberal can deliver the West. What’s left? PEI?

Many many years ago ( 5) in another era when Rae and Iggy lurched into being the comeback kids of the Natural Governing Party, they could count on the MSM to let them tell a lie on one coast and the opposite lie on the other coast and it would go un-reported. Now they have no place to hide and when Sun TV starts rolling tape it will only get worse for them. Besides, they aren’t kids any more, they are aging boomers.

  3. Janine Krieber face book post was prophetic. Many Liberals have made similar statements about the empty shell and endless in fighting.

The Rob Ford rebuke in the GTA, strong polling for PC Hudak this week.

A Liberal opposition mired in below 30% unable to raise funds and grassroots help in Vaughan.

Louise may see the "writing on the wall" and decide to not join Thelma for that final scene. Retirement on your terms before the majority as a realization that the inheritance of what is left is not salvageable.

  4. Rae was the #3 pick of the B Team for LPC leader,
    so that's a no go.
However, when the LibDips try a do-over of the coalition of losers,
Rae would naturally be the #1 pick of a coalition LibDip party,
he is the tie that could bind the 2 parties, and that's why Chretien's guy is there.

  5. Rae has only two problems: nobody in Ontario would vote for him and nobody outside of Ontario would vote for him.

  6. Every Liberal leader since Paul Martin has been a temporary stand in until the chosen one (Justin T) has been sufficiently groomed as to be ready to ascend to the throne. God help us all...
