Should Senate Appointments Last A Lifetime?

Today's poll question; should Senate appointments last a lifetime? I found it odd that the opposition would vote down Tory legislation to limit Senate terms from life to 8 years. The NDP wants to scrap the Senate, but isn't term limits a good first step? How can you logistically say that you want to scrap the institution but then vote in favour of lifetime appointments? It is hypocritical. We have several examples of Senators behaving badly (many of those Liberal, like that Lavigne guy) and yet the opposition wants guys like that to keep their jobs forever?

I understand the Liberals voting this down, because they believe that their bureaucrats are entitled to their entitlements, but shouldn't this have been a step in the right direction for the Dippers?

  1. Some ndp guy on P&P yesterday said the ndp voted against fast tracking said bill in retaliation for killing the climate bill.
AA has a post up explaining why the bill C10 is not dead, just fast tracking it was killed.
If they voted in retaliation, how can they say the conservatives were playing tricks, how many other votes have the ndp cast in retalliation. Have they ever voted in favor of one bill since PMSH was elected. Why do voters vote for someone will always be against everything.
I wish Layton would get on his high horse and explain what would have to happen to meet his defeated bill's targets. That might educate his voters on how he wants to send them back to the 7th century with those terrorists he supports.

  2. That bill was only defeated because Libs failed to turn up again. Jack should be targetting them. Of course libs/NDP = coalition.

  3. 8 year terms would be the first step in having elected renewable terms. If the Senate is to be the chamber of sober second thought this must not come to pass.
