Ignatieff To Teenagers: Decriminalize Marijuana Possession

Talk about a wildly inappropriate policy announcement in the wrong place at the wrong time. Iggy did one of his "Open Mike" sessions with teenagers at a high school where he announced that he wanted to decriminalize marijuana possession in small amounts. Ironically enough, I agree with him on the policy, but in front of teenagers? Even if marijuana were decriminalized, it should not be permitted or encouraged for use among young people. I have no objections if adults want to rock the happy smoke, but not 13 year olds. It was an incredibly stupid move to make this announcement at a high school in front of teenagers.

This was an unscripted Q&A. I wonder at what point during his answer that Iggy Pop realized he should not be having this conversation at a high school with an audience that is mostly under the legal drinking age. You gotta wonder if Donolo slapped him in the face after he walked off the stage.

  1. Sadly, there are many Canadians that will ONLY hear THIS policy from MIA and cast their vote based on it and I agree, the venue should not have included minors.

Further, why is it fashionable today to push the use of one form of lung intoxicant and demonize another? Is everyone so naive as to ignore the long term health issues as they did with addictive tobacco products?
For me, it's such a contradiction and pure hypocricy.

  2. Used to be the big issues with high school students seen by grownups was for students to get educated. Be good people. Put back into the community.

  3. With all the no smoking laws, where will they be allowed to smoke this stuff.
And, how long before 13 yr olds can vote, so why waste his time. He could be turning off their parents from liberals if this is what they push.
But, my son, who is over 50, come home from a speech from some prof, when in grade 12, and said, he told us marijuana is good, and parents are stupid to deny it.
Pushing mj to students has been going on for many years.
When those kids can vote iggy will be long gone from politics.

  4. Iceman: "You gotta wonder if Donolo slapped him in the face after he walked off the stage." Really? Don't you think this is pushing it maybe a little?

  5. MIA is showing again and again that his practical judgment is weak. Of course he was MIA when his kids were tweenies, so he does not get the fine line that parents have to walk. Sometimes you have to NOT be totally open with young, impressionable teens, especially if you do approve of certain behaviours for 18/19 year-olds. The goal is to help the kids resist peer pressure at too early an age. They should have asked him about abortion and pre-marital sex too. I am sure that he would have been equally frank.
