Artistic Activism

This week on the Soloman Show, I watched an interview with "activist" singer Sarah Harmer where they discussed the importance of political activism by artists. It is fine for artists to have an opinion and voice that opinion, but I get annoyed when they believe that their opinion is somehow more important than others just because they were blessed with quality vocal chords. The ability to sing or act does not automatically trump another person's ability to think. Kind of like how Rosie O’Donnell and Charlie Sheen's opinion on structural engineering is more important than that of actual engineers.

You might have some nice pipes Sarah (I don't know as I have never heard your music), but be careful not to take yourself too seriously.

  2. Artists should stick to what they know. Which isn't EVER politics. More like learned behavior than actual political/historical/scientific knowledge.

Get it? Good cuz I don't expect them to until they're 70 and actually got the time on their hands to pay attention!

I know politics,(well, problem solving is my shtick.), so I stuck with it and ditched art.

All for the better mind you.

  3. What is an actor but someone who pretends to be a real person? They have skill sure but a life in entertainment hardly makes you a policy genius. From what I've seen being an entertainer sets you back a few notches.

  4. Couldn't agree more Iceman, when Paul Hewson, name made up for stage of Bono, starts telling Canadians how many hundreds of millions we should be pouring down the third world rat hole, me I wanna puke all over his talented, but punk ass. Especially rich that he moved all HIS money offshore so he doesn't pay taxes.
I really think there should be a rule , when they start beakin' about what other people should be doing, they should shut up, or, kick in an amount that jives percentage wise. With their accumulated wealth with what they are asking other people to do. They also should not be able to use their "Fake" name if they are doing politics. Really who cares what Paul Hewson thinks?
    Cheers Bubba

  5. These so called artists forget that there are those that agree with them and those who don't. Those who don't wont buy their product, be it cd, tv show, movie or whatever. So, it they only want to sell to a small percentage of people go ahead and turn off the rest of us.

  6. This is why i stopped listening to Joh nMoore on CFRB, he slowly became full of himself and mocked poeple who questioned the AGW position just because Al Gore made a movie that fool the useful idiots.
Moore pretends to be enlightended just from the Arts&Culture tag he clings to,the only time I ejoyed his show was when he mentioned he was a stand-up comic for about 15 years......now that was funny.

  7. No problem with me if artists take themselves far too seriously (I mean, don't we all?). The real issue is when others give them credibility simply just because they are artists...
