I had been expecting the opposition to jump all over the announcement by government that employment equity policies are going to be reviewed. What I did not expect was a majority of Evan Soloman's audience at the CBC actually agreeing with the government's position in an online poll. It seems that there is bipartisan opposition to the practice of hiring people based on skin colour. I suppose that you don't have to be Liberal or Conservative to feel discriminated against when you fill out a job application that asks for your race and then states that preference will be given to applicants of another colour than you.
On one hand it seems kind of strange for the government to get a single complaint from a Tory blogger and then announce an overhaul of government policy. That's all it takes, one complaint? I have complained about the HST, how come that hasn't been revisited? And yet, this may turn out to be a very smart political play that may gain some traction among opposition supporters. The Liberal website is accusing the government of declaring war on minorities, but in all fairness maybe they should have checked with the 246 left wing viewers of the Soloman Show first?
Should the government review its employment equity policies?
Yes 53% (131 votes)
No 43% (105 votes)
Unsure 4% (10 votes)
Total Votes: 246
I guess Ignatieff should watch the CBC more :
ReplyDelete"We believe in affirmative action," Ignatieff said in a speech to a multiethnic crowd.
The Conservatives have ordered a review of policies where minorities are given preferential treatment for some jobs.
Ignatieff said the review is unnecessary and called it an example of the Conservatives' ideological approach to governing the country."
Wasn't it Joe Clark who used to be criticized for being on the wrong side of every issue ?
Churches now have employees sit behind a computer to seek out those who need help,
ReplyDeleteinstead of walking amongst us.
Ignatieff may believe in affirmative action, but in 2005 the Liberals did not support it.
ReplyDelete"The Liberal support for hiring based on racial quotas is at odds with what the party said during its time in power.
A 2005 memo from the top bureaucrat at the public works department said all hires from outside the department were to be from the designated groups.
The reaction from Scott Brison, the then Liberal minister for the department, was swift. Brison overruled the bureaucrat.
At the time, Brison said, “I support the whole policy of inclusion but I do not support discriminating against any group in hiring practice."

Liberals....still talking out both sides of their mouths.
Louise M.
With Iggy floundering around Canada like a wino with $20 in his pocket, this thing should turn out funny.
ReplyDeleteI have a sense the number of persons agreeing with the government's stance would roughly equal the number of persons who have had to deal with civil servants whose accents are virtually incomprehensible and whose comprehension of English as she are spoke here in Canada is virtually non-existent.
ReplyDeleteNot only do they not speak understandable english, they have absolutely no clue what you are asking about.
ReplyDeleteSame goes for a lot of telemarketers that call, and I just say, I just tell them I don't do business with anyone that has taken a canadian's job.

Iggy's Liberals are taking their job description of Opposition too literally.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't seem to matter to them whether or not a government decision is right or wrong, they oppose it.
I have a feeling that Harper knew how that CBC poll would break down before he even broached the affirmative action subject.
And he knew the Liberals couldn't resist pandering for votes.
Update on the CBC poll ... it now stands at 58/38 our way (total votes 329).
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's the Globe Online Poll where 80 % agree with a review of employment equity.
Iggy's knee-jerk opposition to EVERYTHING that Harper does has got to be the most idiotic political "strategy" one could devise. We've got so many quotes, pics and videos of this guy, that we can put together all kinds of negative election ads.
The Libs keeping Iggy longer and longer is about as stupid as a guy who opens an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant next door to the Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp. Both are going out of business.
p.s. Great catch Louise !
"Iggy's knee-jerk opposition to EVERYTHING that Harper does has got to be the most idiotic political "strategy" one could devise."
ReplyDeleteWhat do you expect from an ivory tower professor who's been out of the country for as long as he has. He even tried to bring back an old long dead Trudeau policy but didn't realize it since he was probably not around to of seen it implemented and then scrapped.
"We've got so many quotes, pics and videos of this guy, that we can put together all kinds of negative election ads."
Why waste the camping funds? the man is his own negative ad campaign just as Dion was a Grover/Kermit puppet for the even more radical left in their party.
All the Tories had to do was let him speak for himself.
at times it would seem that we ignorant white people are the minority.
ReplyDeleteWomen are already over represented in the civil service, a fact even the head of the civil service commission admits. When this is pointed out, some argue that they are stacked in the lower levels. Then how can recruiting more of them solve this problem? It can't, the solution is to cure a pronblem that no longer exist.
ReplyDeleteDepending on where you live in our great country, being white is being a minority.
ReplyDeleteI believe in hiring based on merit, not lowering the qualifications to get specific representation. Hardly seems fair to work hard, study hard and get a lower paying job or no job because you don't fit the politically correct government discrimination.
