Canadian Politician Tries To Shut Down Blog

If a politician contacted Google to try and get a blog removed from the Internet for being too critical (and was rejected), would Google inform the blogger of this request? Because according to the CBC in 2009 an unknown Canadian politician tried to get a blog shut down and was rejected because the blog did not violate any of Google's user policies. The article doesn't say which blog or which politician, but I would really love to know. Does anyone know who the protagonists are in this story? I tried a Google search and did not find anything. As someone who wrote hundreds of blog posts in 2009 often very critical of politicians, I'd very much like to know more.

  1. I wouldn't worry too much, once Harper and his commie party bring in the internet censorship law Canada's internet will be as bad if not worse the Communist China.

  4. It's gotta be a lefty blog and tory politician if CBC is on the case.

  5. Actually the story was primarily focused on world governments requesting user information from Google about their clients. The Canadian politician trying to shut down a blog was a smaller element of the larger story.

If it were a Tory trying to shut down a lefty blog, would the CBC protect the anonymity of the politician?

Oh I'd prematurely assumed that Google and not CBC had shielded the identities of the blogger and politician.

Something else that's odd.. (another assumption) - wouldn't a politician be cagey enough to proxy the request through some other party? Hmm.. maybe it IS a dipper..

  8. If this was a CBC story I would bet a lot of money that the name of any CPC politician associated with the request would be splashed on the headlines and repeated obsessively through the report. The silence on this matter sort of narrows down the list of suspects, don't you think?

Looking at the United States for examples, it seems far more common for Democrats and "progressives" to try to attack and intimidate bloggers into shutting down or retracting posts (while left wing websites have a reputation for "scrubbing" posts, headlines and news stories. Orwell would appreiciate that). And of course which Party and Administration has been most active in seeking means to control the internet?

I am not privy to any current Canadian government initiatives to censor or control the Internet, just the CRTC getting smacked down when fishing for reasons to do so. Perhaps you could enlighten us?

  11. pissedoff-

From what ive seen in my travels online ,there is no excuse for child pornography to flourish freely online.

There is no excuse for jihadists to be allowed to recruit lone wolves from the West.
Malayasia is quickly becoming a concern as they seem to believe they dont need to listen to infidels.
This issue is the least of Canadians and humanities problems trust me.

That being said we arent stupid and will watch all politicians closely you can be rest assured of that.

If i setup a honeypot so i can data mine information on child pornographers or jihadists, i would simply notify the authorities of my doing so.Im pretty sure they would be grateful for intel i can provide without them having to hunt/pay for it.

Be part of the solution, not the problem.
