Gilles Duceppe, "more human than human"

I never could quite figured out what Rob Zombie meant by the lyrics "more human than human", but today it reminded me of the first among equals status being demanded by Gilles Duceppe in his recent statements about seat distribution in the Commons. While there exists a considerable disparity in the number of constituents that different MPs represent, Gilles insists that any attempt to correct this disparity is an attack against Quebec specifically. I understand him taking the opportunity to play the victim card in his French resistance, but it is hard to make the argument that you deserve more representation in the Commons than your population share warrants. The problem is that the disparity is between the Maritimes and the rest of Canada, not Quebec. In fact la belle province is ranked 4th in confederation for constituents per MP. They probably could have given Quebec City a couple extra seats such that their share would not be a symbolic zero, but this will now put our 4 most populated provinces on equal footing. The legislation makes us more equal, it is not an attack on the people of Quebec.

For more on this subject, I strongly recommend Hinchey's take.

  1. quebec is treated so unfairly within Canada that I think they should separate immediately. Lets help them by the ROC voting them out of confederation with nothing but their share of the national debt.

  2. I can't quote anyone, but I recall hearing that if Quebec was successful in separating, then the Cree Nation would have wanted to separate from Quebec. That would have included the entire La Grande hydro project....
