Newt To Colonize The Moon

Thus far in the campaign to select a Republican nominee to face Obama in a battle for the White House, I have been skeptical of Newt Gingrich. But today he officially won me over by promising to build a permanent base on the moon by the end of his 2nd term. Sign me up for Team Newt, and let's go to the moon! YEAH! Finally a Presidential nominee serious about space exploration that we can get excited about, capturing the imagination of Trekkies and nerds around the globe.

My sincere apologies if I was not fair in my initial opinion of the future Republican President, this totally makes up for it and I genuinely hope he wins. Now it doesn't seem so ridiculous to have put "golfing on the moon" on my bucket list...though at the time it seemed very unrealistic...

  1. As a trekkie and nerd, I'm very excited about space exploration, and hope that the issue stays on the table, and is not ridiculed, by anyone, at any point along the political spectrum.

I'm not against a permanent presence on the moon. But I think we can think bigger, and do better, than the moon. Mars is much more promising as a place to settle. And we have been... negligent, insofar as we have yet to fully explore and exploit the resources of the astroid belt.

  3. I hope your are kidding...there are bigger problems than going to the moon. Like te gazzilion dollar deficit.

As a geek though, I'd rather have a holodeck

    1. Kidding? Newt is now my man! Let's colonize the moon! He won me over, even if this statement was pandering to Florida's out of work areospace workers.

I'm pulling my endorsement of any other candidate for President. It is all Newt all the time.

  4. Wonderful idea! Something only a republican would think of to get elected!

Gee it might even work when one considers how Obama promised jobs and prosperity for all Americans and the people actually fell for that one.

If it works we’ll probably have the NDP promising Quebec free trips to the moon and a even some kind special status, entitlement or claim to the moon. Wait; Quebec is already the Nation Within A Nation?

Heck give ’em the moon also. We’ll pay for it in Alberta like we already pay Quebec, Ontario and eastern Canada’s entitlements!

  5. Newt for President!!! The idea is to kick Obama's butt and Newt is just the guy to do it and the Demorats know it. Watch all the pro-Romney cootchey-coo stuff that will be coming out. Do you want to debate Newt!! If you were a terrorist, would you want Newt with his finger on the trigger?

  6. I like that fact that Newt actually has a plan for space development. Obama talked a good game, and encouraged / forced NASA to pay more attention to private space companies, but then grew tired of it, cut NASA's budget (not necessarily bad in itself) and left it to the Washington Beltway crowd to fight over the remaining pork barrel with the absurd, expensive and retro "Senate Launch System" (to nowhere).

    Ad astra per Newt.

  7. Yes it is a good idea and he can be president of the moon (man in the moon) good place for him as there is low gravity and it will not wear him out carrying that big head around.

  8. Umm The Van Allan radiation belt.
We can't go to the moon, we'd die trying to get there.
We have never gone to the moon.
There is no technology today that can protect a human so they can pass through the Van Allan belt.
Manned space travel is not possible today or in the near future.

  10. "Wonderful idea! Something only a republican would think of to get elected!"

Well... it was Kennedy who set the moon goal in the first place. Though that wasn't quite an election idea...

  11. Obama's billion dollar campaign started with the freebie State of the Union address,
and looks poised to win him another shot at ruining what's left of the US economy.

So at least make Barry O and his teleprompter go up against Newt, instead of Barbie's 'Ken doll' Mitt Romney.

  12. And Republicans say Ron Paul is insane.

  13. Is this a joke? Please tell me this is a joke. "We're up to our eyeballs in debt! MOON TIME". It's a perfect working symbol of the grandiose idiocy that is Newt Gingrich.

  14. Newt did not actually say he was going to build a base on the Moon, but use incentives like prize money to encourage private industry to do so.

The implications of that should be scaring the crap out of the political establishment, the bureaucracy and their crony capitalist clients; if a huge and ambitious project can be done without government or bureaucratic direction, then any large project can be done without needing or involving bureaucrats or paying off crony capitalists:

    Repairing decaying infrastructure?
Providing decent medical care to large numbers of people?
Creating high quality educational programs that everyone can access?

Shifting the model away from todays high cost, low quality model would unleash vast amounts of new wealth and opportunity. I'm not sure if even Newt has thought through the implications of this, but his out of the box thinking has lots of people running scared.
