Strombo Lecturing Canada on "Right Wing Ideology"?

It seems nowadays like every time I turn on CBC Newsworld, I see a documentary featuring professor Strombolopolis lecturing Canada on the history of what he repeatedly refers to as "right wing ideology". You may be familiar with such buzz words as "right wing ideology" from Liberal MPs in Question Period (Goodale is the worst offender). This "documentary" has pretty much been running every weekend day since its release, as though the program directors at the 24 hour news network have confused themselves with the History Channel. 70 year old news, way to go guys!  I tune into Newsworld to consume news, not to watch some glorified DJ deliver a misguided history lesson.

I understand that it is unlikely curious George put all this material together on his own. In fact he didn't present anything that hasn't already been said on one of the other 10,000 documentaries that have already been made about World War II, boldly going where hundreds of documentaries have gone before. Fascism is a form of strong arm totalitarian government/dictatorship that emerged from the Great Depression, but you can have both right wing fascists and left wing fascists and thus it is not correct to label fascism as uniquely right wing.

What Georgie doesn't mention is that Benito Mussolini was beloved by American Liberals until his invasion of Ethiopia. He really should read the book Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg (which has over 60 pages of footnotes) before participating in such a project. Adolf Hitler's political party was called the "National Socialist German Workers Party", where the Fuhrer himself rose to power from the German labour movement. The Nazi Party platform even reads "we demand the nationalization of all associated industry. We demand a division of profits from heavy industry" (see Liberal Fascism, appendix 1). Demanding a greater share of corporate revenue and the nationalization of heavy industry does not sound like small government and low taxes to me. It sounds more like NDP policy than conservative.

"There is no word in the English language that gets thrown around more freely by people who don't know what it means than "fascism." Indeed, the more someone uses the word "fascist" in everyday conversation, the less likely it is that he knows what he's talking about."

  1. Good call, Frosty.

One should also keep in mind that the definition of fascism has been treated as significantly malleable by academics.

For example, Stalinist Marxists have always argued that Maoism is neofascist. Yet they freak out whenever anyone suggests that left-wing movements can be fascist just as easily as right-wing movements can.

  2. Ah the left strikes back eh? hehehe They are beat. They are socialists just very nationalistic. They hated the whole international socialism thing. What exactly makes Hitler right wing? Total government is the antithesis of freedom. Anyway you know all about it. I want to find this documentary for myself. What is it called?

  3. Open Season:

Now that the CTV and several PPG reporters have made MP mortgages public business... This means reporter's mortgages are fair game. This could get very interesting.

  4. Just turn on CBC Newsworld anytime on the weekend and you can't miss it. Though if you can't wait, it may be on the CBC website. The title is Love, Hate, and Propaganda.

  6. As not one of the ten viewers of the CBC, I applaud your willingness to subject yourself to low quality programming.

I tune in when asked to comment on a horrible interview.

Rob Harvie had a funny clip of Ignatieff talking about his bad day at the office. It was funny and sad watching the Liberals implode. Democracy would be better served if we had a responsible opposition that would challenge and introduce real alternatives in parliament.

  7. I read communist theory when I was a kid.
    Every kid should.
The bait and switch of communism is that true communism can't be achieved right away.
No, first thing after the revolution is to establish a dictatorship of the proletariat.
And keep publishing five year plans until society collapses.

As for Strombo, he never misses a chance to get his 'fnurr fnurr fnurr' action from the audience every time he trots out his anti-Harper schtick.
Critically speaking, he has the depth of mud puddle.
I guess he thinks he's the next J.D. Roberts.
    Not faulting his ambition.
He's just thrown in with a bad lot.
