You may recall in December that a number of Greenpeace aligned neo-hippie environmental activists made it past the Parliamentary RCMP who guard our legislature and hung a big goofy sign from the roof (see: When Pacifists Attack). Here we are 5 months later and the RCMP has recommended access to machine guns as a remedy to ensure that this type of hippie PR stunt does not occur again. Listen, for all my disagreements with the Green lobby, I gotta say that the Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun seems like an extreme overreaction. Tear gas and rubber bullets should be plenty.
Next time a guerrilla group like this gets by the cops, we shouldn't be trying to pump thousands of bullets per minute into the mob. What ever happened to pepper spray? Aren't there fire hoses in the halls of Parliament? Hit them with some fire hose, shoot a few dozen rubber bullets, and top it off with a can of tear gas; and I promise you that the stunt du jour will be aborted. Come to think of it, we are not dealing with the toughest people in the world here, nerf bullets may suffice. My nephew has a nerf gun that could bring just about any hippie to their knees in submission...
I think the MP5 decision is based around threats like we had from the Toronto 18.

If the fine is not collectible additional community service.
We have a large number of areas that could use some improved little control.
How long ago did we bust the Toronto 18? Are we only introducing the MP5 as a response now? I agree that automatic weapons would be best in the event of a terrorist attack, but I believe this particular decision was born from the December embarassment.

These aren't even "machine guns", they're fitted with semi-auto-only trigger groups, so they operate exactly the same as the S&W 5946 pistols they're currently issued with; you pull the trigger, and you get one shot fired, no matter how long you hold the trigger down. But, because the media saw a picture of something that looks (gasp!) like a MACHINE GUN, they're going into freak-out mode.

In response Kory wonders if Terry is suggesting that the information to rescue melissa Fung CBC reporter should have been refused?
ReplyDeleteWhich reminded me of the cone of silence and secrecy put in place by the MSM to protect a journalist. CBC does not believe in protecting Canadian soldiers only journalists.
I could read your "tongue in cheek" and was going to give you a blast why we need the RCMP with machine guns but Blue Collar said it in a nicer tone. Besides the machine guns, I am sure they will have other milder arsenal like tear gas and rubber bullets at hand for the increasing violent "Redpeace" hooligans.
