Things are getting a little carried away, especially if it is true that the Liberal Party is starting to kick the tires on some campaign airplanes in preparation for possibly defeating the Government in the next few months. Taber's source is a "senior Ignatieff official" (most likely Donolo), so I don't know if there is any truth to it, but the Liberals have to be nuts if they think they have a chance at forming Government any time soon. There may be a confidence showdown if Peter Milliken grants the contempt of Parliament motion, which may be what this story is all about.
I suspect that there is some paranoia in the Liberal caucus that the Prime Minister could appoint a Governor General that would not be receptive to a coalition Government that includes the Bloc Quebecois. We know that there are a number of left wing pundits who would like to see some form of merger between the Liberals and NDP, people more likely to support Bob Rae, and they might be spooked that the new GG would be even less receptive to a coalition request. Sure Michaelle Jean granted prorogation twice, but she never listened to an exact request for a coalition Government.
If the Prime Minister selects a GG that is opposed to coalitions with the Bloc, it significantly diminishes the probability of the Liberals forming Government in the next couple of years.
There's gonna be an election anyway.
ReplyDeleteEconomy double dips soon.
HST, rising bank rates, housing bubble's gonna pop.
Gotta roll the dice before that starts to sink in.
Dance is right - I see gloom for September/October in the markets ahead of the uncertainty of a Rep rise in the US and gridlock on Obama's domestic agendas. The HST will indeed kill Cdn real estate markets for a while in BC and Ontario. That breather will be fine long-term, but will spoil the nice numbers.
ReplyDeleteCoalition of the Left 616 candidates, Conservatives 308 candidates. How is this democracy?
ReplyDeleteBob Rae and Jack Layton would dominate the Coalition; stopping corporate tax cuts when the Canadian dollar so high with the Euro and the American dollar would be a job stopper.
Agreed,
ReplyDeletea global double dip may take place in the fall in those countries that have not done enough to fix their balance sheets.
The stage is set for this fall in cutting government and elimination of government programs(as did Martin). The amount of capacity to cut will be much smaller.
The CPC won't have an EI fund to raid of $ 60 billion. The CPC will not tighten the rules and disqualify large number of people from qualifying. (Not on their backs)
The CPC won't repeat the cuts transfers to provinces as the Liberals did in Healthcare, Education, Social Services. ($ 25 Billion)
The Liberals were ruthless, benefited from a growing global economy.
The CPC will need the Global recovery to take hold.
Speeding up foreign credentials, lowering inter provincial trade barriers may productivity gap. Improving access to foreign investment is also important.
If we are going to be a truly open for business country we need to become globally competitive in more than our corp. tax rate.
Keep your eyes on Jack. Iggy is lame and Gilles is just out to cause trouble. Don't underestimate their ability to raise a fuss that can sell some newspapers. Before you know it, election.
ReplyDelete-And would you guys knock it off with your double dips? I've been hearing that song since the scary "great recession" started. Reality has exceeded even my optimism at every turn.
If their was any real justice in this country, that rat would be booked onto Con Air.
ReplyDeleteHis crime: impersonating a Canadian.
His punishment: deportation and shunning.
Will Layton go for the jugular and throw iggy to the back of the bus, with the possibility of him becoming opposition leader.
ReplyDeleteAnd if guilt by association is taking Helena down, why isn't Bob Rae going down with his association with Mo Strong of Oil For Food scandal. After all, Mo visited Bob's home, and they have been seen together in restaurants.
