Does Michaelle Jean even want a 2nd term?

With all the pundits speculating over whom her replacement will be and drawing inferences about why Michaelle Jean was not selected for a 2nd term; I would like to ask if the GG even wants to keep her current employment. It seems that everyone is assuming that the Governor General even wants to stay in Rideau Hall, when infact she may want to be named as a special envoy to Haiti. Our relief efforts will be continuing for at least a few more years, and our presence likely will be permanent in some capacity once the country has been rebuilt. I suspect that the GG would rather take on a diplomatic role to her home country than remain as the Queen's representative in Canada. Am I wrong?

For some insight into where this conversation began, I direct you to Tory Talk.

  1. I read somewhere recently that GG Jean has asked to be appointed as a special advisor to Haiti. Haiti has drawn her attention away from her full role of GG for Canada in recent months and as important as Haiti is we need someone whose commitment and priorities are not torn between two countries don't you think?

  2. Although the G.G. is from Haiti she still loves Canada. She should have her term extended.

  3. I don't think it matters what she wants because the press will spin it against the Conservatives anyways.

  4. This is a terrible time to seem like one is disparraging the people of Haiti.

That being said, I think Haiti would be an insufficient use of Michaelle Jean's diplomatic talents. Rather, I think Michaelle Jean should be appointed as Canada's Ambassador to France, or perhaps Ambassador to the United Nations.

  5. Has anyone considered that she does not want a second term-
And has anyone considered that instead of asking Rick Hansen to be the next GG, the PM was sounding him out a Senate appointment that becomes available in June.
If there is an election, and we get a majority, there will be 15 Senate vacancies by the end of 2012. Most of them are liberals. The one in June is a Progressive Conservative.
There will be too more vacancies by Dec 2010.

  6. I think the GG would be the ideal person as Canada's rep in Haiti .... but only until that country learns to stand on their own and stop depending on other countries to feed and clothe them like the palestinians. Hopefully, she will bring a sense of pride to the Haitians and they will try and become more like their independent neighbour The DR.
Like Patrick, I think Jean will be wasted on Haiti, but from what we have seen of her during the earthquake crisis, she will not see it that way.
