Harperland
Is it just me, or does the CBC get just a little too giddy when somebody writes a book critical of Stephen Harper? CBC Newsworld has been running this "infomercial" for Harperland all day, treating it as a news story and giving the author a whole lot of free advertising. One of the few certainties in life; write a book that's negative about Prime Minister Harper and you will get plenty of face-time on the CBC to help you market and sell the product. Kady and Rosie can laugh and make jokes about the accusations and Evan Soloman can do an exclusive interview. I think Lawrence Martin has spent the whole day at the CBC building. I wonder if this book will sell more copies than the NDP dude who wrote the book about the failed coup of 2008?

It was getting pretty wide coverage on CTV this morning too. It always amazes me when people try to deny the CBC's Liberal bias.
ReplyDeletethis Harper-hatred has taken on new dimensions, and the Toronto-centric media is in it up to its eyeballs - it has always been a Lieberal feature to spawn rumour and innuendo based hate against any Conservative leader (starting with Deif), to cover their own flaws, and will not cease until they are relegated to the trash in an election - Harper is likely the best Pm in 100 years, and our work is cut out for us
ReplyDeleteIts not just you.
ReplyDeleteI flipped back and forth between P&P and Power Play today. It was a choice of least annoying at that moment. SUNTV is so important. The choice is always between bad and worse and SUNTV is going to knock them all down simply by dispensing with spin.
"I wonder if this book will sell more copies than the NDP dude who wrote the book about how the failed coup of 2008?"
ReplyDeleteYou might try reading a book and learning something of sentence structure or grammar.
And then perhaps learning something of Canadian Constitutional Law.
And while you are at it, look up a definition of the word coup.
Well DRRINO...obviously YOU believe that the failed overthrow of our government by the political losers was legitimate. Most other Canadians disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteOh and that "constitution" you hold so dear isn't worth the paper it is written on. Just another one of Trudeau's failings as the worst PM in Canadian history.
Harper is likely the best Pm in 100 years, and our work is cut out for us
ReplyDeleteThis irritates the MSM and their corrupt liberal party that took 57-60 BILLION dollars from the E I FUND, then, they transfer INTO GENERAL Account to use AS THE liberals please.
The liberAls under Paul martin and Goodale raised the E I premiuns to canadians to have them repay the fund.
Had the liberals not taken the E. I. funds of 56-60 Billion dollars, we would not be in this predictament today.
Where were the reporters back then to report such abuse, to the public- Nowhere.
And, where are they reporters, today, to report this same story.
Where oh where can the the reporters be- I know, in bed with the LIBERALS.
I would thank you, Alberta Girl, to not twist my words. I did not state my views on the failed attempt a coalition government in 2008, I only implied that it was not a coup. I, being someone who believes in freedom of expression and a diversity of opinions, believe that it was legitimate of the opposition to suggest a way to avoid an election so quickly following the prior one. Whether the Governer General would have been able to consider that suggetion is the interesting question, and the one where legitimacy becomes an issue.
ReplyDeleteIt is also interesting to note that while the conservate party had won a plurality of the seats in the election, they had not yet passed a vote and thus had not won the confidence of the House at that point, raising questions about whether the PM's request to close the session of Parliament was legitimate.
And as I said in my first post, with any due respect: learn something of Canadian Law. The Constitution of Canada is more than the 1982 Act.
And Trudeau may not have been great, and you may believe he is the worst PM in our country's history, he does have 2 things going for him. He stuck to his ideas and values, and he was able to unite Canada more than most of our other PMs have.
The upside is CBC was reach was only 6%. It climbed to 10% with infusion of American Gameshows and HNIC, World Cup.
ReplyDeleteThe CBC is number two behind CTV. The CBC has NO news programs in the top 30.
So like the Liberal bus tours, they are speaking to a very small minority and already drinking the kool-aid.
This is why the idea of not hugging the social justice teat, Sun TV will eat their lunch.
Drrino " ... he was able to unite Canada more than most of our other PMs have."
ReplyDeleteTrue - but few PM's have had a chance to pull the War Measures Act. Canadians on the whole liked that a lot.

This book is getting a lot of press from everywhere because we're all interested in hearing about Mr. Harper from closer in. I understand Lawrence Martin characterizes Mr. Harper as a successful, highly intelligent person who is also very controlling. There seems to be quite a bit of evidence for that. I personally can't wait to read it. Of course, for people who only read things that they probably agree with, it may be a stretch.

Drrino said "he was able to unite Canada more than most of our other PMs have."
ReplyDeleteand I (SDC) say you must have a really warped view of what "screw the West, we'll take the rest" means. That turd Trudeau isn't nearly dead enough, and I'm surprised that Martin crawled out of Chretien's ass long enough to write another book.
I love it when some people point to what they consider other people’s lack of language skills only to go on to demonstrate their own … lack thereof. For example ...
ReplyDelete• the *Governer* General
• that *suggetion*
• the *conservate* party
But let's leave spelling, typos, or questions of syntax aside.
Drrino said: "It is also interesting to note that while the conservate [sic] party had won a plurality of the seats in the election, they had not yet passed a vote and thus had not won the confidence of the House at that point, raising questions about whether the PM's request to close the session of Parliament was legitimate."
I hate to burst Drrino's bubble, but he may have forgotten that accepting or agreeing to the Speech from the Throne, even with an amendment, constitutes a vote of confidence in the government. The leader of the Official Opposition said on November 20: “The official opposition does not intend to use this occasion to bring the government down.” [Hansard, Thursday, November 20, 2008]
In other words, the Liberals accepted the results of the election, and expressed their confidence -- of course, with the customary reservations or “amendment” -- in the PM and the Conservatives’ ability to govern, even if it was in a minority situation. Standing & sub-committees were formed, with no intimations of a coalition.
The Economic Update, the pretext used by the coalition to wrest power from the Conservatives, was brought down on November 27 ... and the rest is history.

Jen, not only did the Chretien Liberals raid the EI fund of $54 Billion and fake surplus',
ReplyDeleteon Dec 11, 2008 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the Chretien Liberals got the money ILLEGALLY in 2002, 2003, 2005.

It is because of Trudeau, Western Canada is Tory Blue.
ReplyDeleteTrudeau killed the LPC with his NEP in Western Canada for at least 4 generations, maybe 5.
And because the 4 Western provinces hold 92 federal seats, of which Liberals are mostly denied,
Iffy will NEVER be PM.
Thankyou Trudeau, you were good for something!
Gabby, thank you for pointing out my typos, and noting that they are typos.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you are correct that I was mis-informed regarding the confidence of the House. On the evening of the 26th the House did pass the throne speech, on division. I was the one mis-informed on that, I have checked the records and you are correct.
Thanks for your post Gabby, I am glad that someone here is able to have a reasonable debate.
Gabby, thank you for refuting Dr Rhino's false claim. We are generally very accepting of spelling and grammar mistakes here, but I guess when some clown writes "You might try reading a book and learning something of sentence structure or grammar. And then perhaps learning something of Canadian Constitutional Law" they had best run a spell check in subsequent posts.
ReplyDeleteCoup: "A sudden overthrow of government"
Sorry Dr Rhino, my degree is in Economics, not English Lit.
@Drrino:
ReplyDeleteTrudeau united the country?? You must be one of those people who believe the country ends at the Ontario/Manitoba border. Obviously you don't live in Alberta where Trudeau has so tainted the Liberal brand that even the provincial Liberals are thinking of changing their name. Trudeau left a legacy of western alienation that is still manifest today and will remain so long into the future.
Drrino at 8:08 PM, thank you for accepting my corrections with equanimity.
ReplyDeleteIf we ever cross paths again, I hope we can continue to express a difference of opinion without resorting to insults.

The best rebuke of Trudeau I read was a post on NP.
ReplyDelete"I need someone to dig him up, I will have the stake ready"
Iceman, unfortunately some so-called experts -- I suppose Lawrence Martin is considered one -- on the 2008 events are trotted out periodically to revise the events surrounding the coalition.
ReplyDeleteI've filed away examples of articles & op-eds advising the opposition parties to form a coalition during the 2008 election campaign! I don't know how the opposition and their friends in academia & the media can keep a straight face in claiming it was a spontaneous response to the Nov. 27 Economic Update.
I guess we need to stay on our toes, ever ready to counter inaccuracies.
