Major League Baseball has just decided to move a series from Toronto to Philadelphia at the end of June because of security concerns during the G20 Summit that is set to take place simultaneously in Canada's largest city. It does suggest that the government has received security threats, credible or otherwise, that has prompted MLB to make this move almost two months before the series was set to happen. If a threat has not been received, I can't imagine why MLB would do this. I'm pretty sure we can host a baseball game and international dignitaries at the same time.
What stings is that this was to be Doc Halladay's big return to T.O. We know that Geldoff is rallying the crazies, and it is perhaps possible that celebrities pressured MLB to do this in order to help them make a statement. I would be curious to know whether the Canadian Government advised MLB on this matter, or whether it was done entirely by MLB without Government input.

The ball field is directly next to the convention centre where they are meeting. I expect Front Street to be jammed with the dumbells and lunatics.
ReplyDeleteThe ball game isn't the only thing to be disrupted. I have family who work in the area. I will be advising them to stay home. This whole thing could be a great showcase for Toronto or a complete disruption to our economy and a shambles.
