A complaint about the Blogging Tory website

I appreciate Stephen Taylor's attempt to integrate "new media" into the Blogging Tory platform, but the site has become so overloaded with java scripts and such that my browser freezes up when I try to access the site. I don't know if anyone else has experienced similar problems, or if my computer is just too old to handle the extra baggage, but it has gotten to the point where it has become too painstaking to visit. I first noticed the change when they put up all that Facebook crap, which ironically was done right before all the controversy over Facebook privacy settings. I don't know why you would want to tie Blogging into Facebook, as Facebook wants copyrights over any material you post on your page.

If I had a vote, I'd vote to remove the Facebook crap from the Blogging Tory website. It is slowing down the site's performance for little to no benefit.

  1. Don't do FB, have had issues with putting up links including the BT stuff.

  2. Ah, so that's why my computer has slowed right down on BT in recent weeks! Your column now opens slowly, Iceman, while 'Halls of Macadamia' has been freezing my computer up every time.

  3. Hey Bobby, I don't want to hector you, but this seems like it may have been better addressed in the BT forum or in an email to Steve Taylor.

(You can feel free to not publish this comment, if you like.)

  4. Perhaps Patrick, but my secondary objective was to let other Blogging Tories know why I'm not visiting their sites as often as I used to. I am spending less time reading my colleagues opinions because the site keeps crashing my browser. I am guessing that Taylor put a lot of time into the Facebook integration, so I am assuming he's not going to want to take it down.

  5. I haven't had any problems, but any site that links to facebook makes me very leery. If there ever was a web-based app that is dangerous, this is it. It's nothing more than a pervert magnet.

  6. I just had service provider people at my house to diagnose slow service. They had to change the computer modem plug in jack to a dedicated separate line even though I had upgraded at extra cost to Ultra Hi Speed. I still need to get my supplier to rebate me for the slow speed that I have experienced. I do not think it is just facebook. I think it is related to your service provider. I just learned that the phone line providers are experiencing serious problems keeping up with the speeds that are provided by cable suppliers. They are running twice as fast just to keep up. They are limited by legacy line capacity in some areas installed even less than 10 years ago.

It is interesting that I also gave up on reading blogging tories too because of slow uploads. I also complained to Stephen Taylor for even thinking about facebook. I will not even join my daughters facebook page and I have requested for 2 years that she not reference me in any way for privacy reasons. I have to give up pictures of my grandchildren unless sent to me in another way.

  8. I have the exact same experience as Anony except Macadamia has always been slow or frozen for me.

I'm not sure it's FB because the same sites seemed to have their current issues before FB.

CS, your site takes a while for me too but nothing like 'Iceman and Mac'.

I'm patient though when anticipating excellence. ;)

  9. One thing that slows you down when you access my site are the webpolls. Each one is like a little computer program, and the slower the connection the longer each takes to load. That's why I try to limit the number of polls active polls at once to 3 or 4.

Also my site template doesn't load properly on roughly 10% of browsers. I'm not claiming to be perfect or getting on a high horse. I have had some problems personally navigating the Blogging Tories since they put up all the Facebook integration and I would like to vote for them to take it down even if I don't have a say in the matter.

  10. Ice, I am up working late tonight and have tested you a couple of times. The speed has tripled at least, since my post @8:57pm.

Perhaps it is server traffic related and time of day coupled with FB?.

I have high speed too and this late at night has been fabulous!
    Just a thought..

I despise this puter shit. If only we had the telegraph all would be right in the world again.

  12. Whenever a BT page is loading slowly (and it happens quite a bit lately) the message in the lower left corner is always "waiting for twitter.com".

  13. Yeah Syncro. Bring back the telegraph !!

  15. I agree with you, Jake. I gave up using IE quite some time ago.

  16. I've made some changes. It should load a lot faster now.

    Thanks.

  17. I almost always use Firefox and haven't had any problems with BT, although I must say it's even faster now since Stephen made those changes.

My own site is another issue. :(

  18. Thank you for making those changes. It is much much faster now, and I can resume visiting all our great writers!
