The first year of Mike Ignatieff's leadership of the Liberal Party saw faux controversy after faux controversy hurled at the Harper Government in an attempt to make something stick, and it hasn't worked. For a moment it looked like Prorogate was going to damage Tory support, but that didn't last. If their "grassroots" opposition movement where they literally convinced tens of hundreds of partisans and party supports to protest in the streets of Canada, didn’t stick, what will? The polls shifted for a moment, but the country has returned to the steady state.
If all these controversies were unable to shift public opinion (in fact the only major shift has been in Ignatieff's disapproval numbers), then what's it gonna take to make a difference? Half the people who approved of Iggy a year ago no longer do. A wise TV commercial once said "you never get a second chance to make a first impression", so we will see how this plays out. I'll be curious to see what Iggy does over the summer to promote party policy. They got no bounce from Thinkapalooza, and neither Afghan detainees nor lobbyist former MPs have made no impact whatsoever on voter preference. Time to move on to the next subject. I know, fiscal policy is not nearly as exciting as bombastic stories of busty hookers.
While the faux scandals were much a do about nothing, corruption and misuse of public funds will stick. Harper must be careful to ensure a higher standard of accountability. For example, Harper using half a million dollars to use the jet to "sell stimulus" does not make a good headline. I hope the Conservatives will never be complacent like the Liberals were in terms of taxpayers' money.
ReplyDeleteThey're not teflon.
ReplyDeleteThey're just human.
Which is much better than that barely legal alien.
Without active participation by the media the chimps throwing feces won't stick.
ReplyDeleteCount the number of stories that have not panned out.
How many times has the media apologized for leading the charge on a manufactured scandal?
The opposition don't have the contributors filling their warchests to afford television spots to do damage.
TV ads costs real money and they don't have it.
We are mostly at 2008 with some interesting movement in winnable ridings.
The desperation, attacks on the Christianity is evidence how terrified the left have become in preventing a majority for the CPC.
Can you imagine the Canadian media attacking other religious groups so openly for participating in our democracy?
One problem that the Liberals have, is when they go on the attack over their faux scandals - they just don't know when to let go of it. Like a dog with a bone they hang onto it relentlessly.
ReplyDeleteIf they had half a brain, they would attack and withdraw, then attack on a new front. Instead, they drag the faux scandal of the day through the press for weeks and months on end. Then no minister resigns, nobody goes to jail - they just look foolish because there was nothing there to begin with.
People now see the pattern. Opposition attacks, nothing is proven, everything goes back to normal.
Get over yourselves, Liberals, you're just not that good.
Part II to the busty hookers connection with CRA busting NGO remember Cachet Escort Service?

The religion angle is very dangerous for the Liberals. My parents are Catholic and Liberal voters and have been ignoring the fact that Liberals supported gay marriage and abortions. Now that it is being shoved in their faces, they have no excuse when I ask them why they vote Liberal. Trudeau is gone, dead, and buried, but unfortunately his stink lives on.

ReplyDeleteThat's being decided right now by Chretien and Broadbent.
So far it appears the Libs are caving to Dipper demands.
2008 coalition of losers, Jack caved to Dions demand of tax cuts to the corporations,
now that's reversed, and Iffy caved....yah know who will wear the pants in this marriage, eh. Jack!
Iffy once said Kyoto was dead,
but Jack and Lizzy want Kyoto or bust back on the agenda....Iffy will cave.
Tax and spend X 2.
