Did You Celebrate The Charter's Birthday?

Today was the 30th anniversary of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Did you throw a party or otherwise celebrate this occasion? That is today's poll question. There were minor grumblings in the media that the Conservatives were crudely shunning human rights by not throwing a party, which shows you how far the level of discourse has fallen in the Canadian press. I've always viewed the Charter as something that feels nice in theory, but in practice has proven to be a Pandora's Box of frivolous litigation. Frankly it is ridiculous to criticize the Conservatives for not hosting a government celebration of Liberal legislation. Why wasn't today a national stat holiday? Why not hold annual birthday parties for the National Energy Program?

  1. I celebrated the imposition of Pierre's Charter by having a dump... a salute to tribalism... group rights rather then individual rights... Judge imposed social engineering schemes... the exclusion of property rights... the OLA and of course a symbolic salute to the biggest turd of them all, the warped asshole that imposed his Charter, fancy pants Pierre.

  2. I believe it would be akin to celebrating the date of myzelf being forced into indentured servitude.

  3. With all this meowing on the lack of celebrations for the Charter, funny how the Liberals did not demand a great party for the celebration of the National Energy Policy in 2010. Wonder why?

Also W.E. Clark, present CEO of TD Bank was one of the authors of the NEP as an ADM.

  4. Using my finest calligraphy I wrote the Charter on a scroll and hung it in a prominent place. Then I tore a few squares off the scroll wiped my butt with it and flushed twice. Tomorrow I plan on tearing off a few more squares....

  5. Excellent comments. Yes, yes, the Liberals are heroes - Only to them.
The Cons will quietly move on without any fanfare - governing the country in which the Libs/Dips can never imagine even in their finest hour.
Move on, nothing to see here.

  6. Celebration yeah right! The charter of so called rights and freedoms is the biggest lamest liberal joke ever.
Rights for what is my question? There’s no property rights, no rights to bare firearms, no rights to freedom of speech and no rights for victims of crime but it sure as hell protects the criminals.
The charter should have been names the rights and freedom for criminals. The police have been hamstringed when investigating crimes cause they can’t violate a criminal’s right. Serious criminals including murders have been set free cause of a technicality. Defence attorneys have gotten rich defending criminal on so called charter violations. It ahs given convicted felons the right to vote from prison.
The charter has allowed new Canadians to force the government to appease their cultural and religious beliefs. We’ve had to change our laws to accommodate new Canadians so that they are not offended or have hurt feelings. The charter has forced the media to become politically correct. The charter has implemented affirmative action in hiring practices thus creating inequality against Caucasian Canadians.
It a nutshell the charter is one big liberal joke that should be disbanded. Law abiding hard working honest citizens don’t benefit form the charter in any way whatsoever.

  7. Cretch is a hypocrite.

"Chretien has been giving interviews to just about any news outlet that wants one and a recurrent theme is his moaning that Harper is disrespecting the Charter by not doing enough to celebrate this anniversary. And yet, on the 20th anniversary of this Charter, Chretien “declined interviews in advance of the anniversary”, Tonda MacCharles reported on page A6 of the Toronto Star‘s April 18, 2002 edition.

The Harper government may issue a press release on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Charter. Chretien, on the 20th anniversary, couldn’t even be bothered to do that."

  8. I mourned the loss of our individual freedoms and rights which were taken away by Trudeau's charter. It smacks of the old Soviet Union promoting collective rights and freedoms while stomping on individual rights and freedoms. The fact is that we had more freedoms and rights going back centuries prior to this piece of paper called the charter. Furthermore, it removed the power to legislate from our elected government and granted it to non elected judges. We see how well that has worked.

  9. I think that by level of historic significance, the bi-centenary of the War of 1812 deserves far more recognition than an amemdment to the BNA Act of 1867.

  11. Following the precedent set by the liberal government on the 20th anniversary of the charter of rights and lefts , there will be a reading of "the cat in the hat" followed by a reading of Dr. Zeuss' The Spot That Wouldn't Go Away . Then tea and cake !! and a jumbo firecracker in a tin can for the grand finale . Weather permitting , of course . Ican hardly wait .

  12. Old Cretin is beginning to worry about what the history books will have to say about him and his A-Hole boss Turdo. Chretin didn't have any official "celebration" of Pierre's Charter when he was PM... why? because he bloody well knows how seriously flawed and divisive Pierre's Charter is... Chretin was PM when Pierre;s Charter turned 20 and he wouldn't do any interviews regarding the Charter, and he didn't even issue a press release. Interesting to note that Tommy Mulchair had to say about Pierre's Charter in 2010- "Trudeau killed the real Canada"... I say we dig a hole, put Pierre's Charter in it, cover it with manure and stick a rose in it.

  13. I have been discussing the Great and Holy Charter with liberal friends, and they just DO NOT seem to see that the Charter removed our inherent rights and placed them in the hands of the government,to be doled out at their leisure.

I suppose one good element of the Charter is that an ordinary citizen CAN "fight city hall" through them, but I still believe the overall negative outweighs the positive.

Trudeau was a French-Canadian-Quebec-communist dilletante who wanted the appearance of giving another Magna Carta to the peasants, though I'm sure he knew very well it would give all the power to the State in the end.

He worked a sleight-of-hand on the naive people of Canada, and many of us still think he's hero for it.

btw, this coming Friday,April 20 is an important day to young people all over the internet. I won't be celebrating this day either.

  14. No...I did not celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Charter, but all this talk about it certainly reminded me of its importance and its landmark significance in Canadian political history. Putting aside the partisan ideology about whether or not the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a good thing, I think the more significant aspect is that it represents the 30 years since the constitution was repatriated...that is worth celebrating. Not with galas, parties, events but with typical Canadian reflection. No tax payers money should be spent on celebrating it...just as I don't believe millions of tax payers dollars should be spent on 'celebrating' some long ago war of 1812.
