Tory Majority; One Year Later

As we reach the one year anniversary of the Canadian Conservative party winning majority control of parliament, how would you rate this first year of Tory majority government? Do you approve, disapprove, or are you neutral? Much has been accomplished, and there is still 3 years remaining with lots of time on the agenda. Some would argue that democracy is being slowly ripped away from us, others would say the government is doing a far better job than the alternative ever could. Kind of depends who you talk to.

  1. That's a tough question. On the one hand, I'm glad to see that some of the old thorns have been pried from us (LGR, crime bills, etc). On the other hand, they are still acting a lot like they have a minority. I'm not entirely sure why the secrecy, the "toe the line or else" mantra, and so on. You won, get over it already.

So: mixed review, but much happier that the CPC is in power than any of the alternatives

    1. I was happy to see Harper screw whiny seniors by stealing 2 years of OAS.

  2. This is the best damned government I my 50+ years have ever seen. Not perfect, but pretty damned good. They abolished the gun registry, killed the Wheat Board monopoly, and are reducing the sniveling serpents. Too bad about supporting killing unborn children.

  3. I imagine it would depend on your expectations of what has been accomplished including time lines. For some of us we project our personal agenda and rates how effectively it accomplished those markers. Some of us have set the bar lower and hope they avoid REAL scandals, reduce waste and inefficiencies and minimize the patronage while wielding power. As a supporter of the long game I am pleased with the changes of political funding, scrutiny of charities, dismantling of agencies, boards that affect liberty. Their progress in restoring power to provinces is a good sign and look forward to a stronger Federation that will be less pliant to the Ottawa mandarins.

A Game plan has been apparent for a long time.

In 2006 PMSH noted in Britain, Canada would become an energy Superpower, we are well underway in achieving those goals if we secure the nearly 300 billion in investments. In these troubled times Canada is faring rather nicely compared to the rest of the developed world.

I think the BEST is yet to come for this Government and we are witnessing a new natural government that is shifting opinion of Canada as a destination place to live and invest.

Only the opposition and the media party are saying that, because they no longer control the agenda and the government doesn't need them to pass legislation.

  5. While I remain frustrated with the pace of change, I believe the slow and steady approach to everything the government changes is warranted and necessary.

Take trimming/reorganizing the civil service. That is going to take years to reform. I'd love to see massive layoffs, the abolishing of whole departments, and the weeding out of any Liberals in the civil service. But the best way to change the system is a little here, a little there, over several mandates, not in one fell swoop. We have to be disciplined, we have to be clever and we have to be persistent in turning this country and every institution in it to our way of thinking. If we falter, if we become rash and undisciplined, we'll lose an election and then all this work will be for naught.

Unfortunately watching the death by a thousand cuts is a frustrating exercise, especially when you just want to take a wrecking ball to lefty-institutions.

  6. Wouldn't it be nice if we could slap a citizen,s lawsuit onto these MSM types who lie and twist scandals about the Conservatives with screaming headlines in every paper across Canada and some internationally ,then apologize on the back page when they find out the scandal had been manufactured by some sleaze ball.I would even like to see lawsuits handed to opposition members who find the courage in the House of commons to call PM Harper and the Conservatives all sorts of names and accuse them of all kinds of made up scandals.Seems like outside the house these cowards cannot find the courage to utter the same words. And how about kicking the PPG off the hill. And if I was PM Harper I would only give interviews to TV stations that can be trusted. In other words no CBC & NO CTV.BUt getting back to the 1 year versary of the Conservatives.I would love to see a little more fight back, when these PHONY scandals start up( spread the troops around the country and go on national TV to tell the truth & while on TV live call these announcers who are spreading the BS liars, embarrass them and don,t back down from their verbal abuse.Don,t go on these TV shows with other party members anymore,as you do not stand a chance getting your point of view across with them speaking over you and interrupting when your speaking. It is time to fight back against the lies and keep the opposition on the defensive, instead of defending ourselves against these idiots all the time.Aside from that I find that the Conservatives are doing a great job, because their is a lot of howling and crying going on from the lefties. Now if only there was a way to jail McGuinty before he does anymore damage, things would be great.

  7. old white guy says. i think i will reserve comment until after the next budget. if a move to reduce the debt and eliminate the deficit is small or insignificant then you know what i will say.

  8. Remember O'Sullivan's Law; every political entity not overtly conservative will gradually slide to the left. Mike Harris said, in retrospect, "We should have done more, faster."
It does conservatives no good to keep an eye on their backs because electoral prospects will be determined by the climate of satisfaction they build rather than by how many knives and arrows they dodge.

  9. Yeah lovely! We still got the same old liberal policies from the Martin and Chretien days such as gay marriage, abortion and publicly funded selective abortion, massive immigration from Islamic nations that want to kill Jews and Christians, immigration policies that cost tens of billions a year, political correctness to appease any vocal minority to the point where we have lost our freedom of speech, kangaroo quasi courts such as the human rights commission, affirmative action being fully implemented, Quebec a nation within a nation, we have no property or self defence rights, convicted criminals in prisons receiving full extended health care and many privileges, prisoners having the right to vote, Harper refusing to help Israel in the fight against Iran, the Khadr family issue (wait until he receives millions in compensation for suffering civil rights violations), still the same old soft on crime hug a thug policies (don’t give me the stupid bill c-10 thing it’s a liberal joke just read it!)

As for the economy……..you can thank Alberta who keeps Canada afloat to support the socialist Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes!

I agree with you they need to fight back but instead of national TV,go over the national talking heads and go to local media. Easier to get the truth through local than national.

  11. True frmgrl..But local is hard to find nowadays. It is hard enough finding a local radio station other than CFRA or TV other than the Sun.

  12. I agree with a lot of the comments above and feel the same frustrations at the slow pace of change, although a great deal has been accomplished so far, I believe it's necessary to remember that it took that colossal A-hole Trudeau around 25 years to destroy the real Canada and replace it with his own warped vision. For all of us who desire a change from the Trudopian cult, patience is key, although we can't become complacent, and we have to continue to be vigilant and push the Government for more common sense. So far, IMO this is the best Government Canada has had in decades. Slow and steady wins the race.

  15. Don't blame everything on Trudeau, Sean. We've put up with the Natural Governing Party practically non-stop since the mid 1930s. I'm disappointed with the Cons, too, but let's give them the same or similar amount of time. What other party is there out there that could dismantle the Liberal legacy?
